Not sure, but while I agree prioritizing bus speeds is important, safety is the number 1 priority.

A good lesson for longer term operations, where maybe the second through lane should become a RT lane to signal separate turning movements which are high. That could allow a new protected only left lane and phase at Mass and St. Botolph, which is sorely needed.

Loving what @streets.boston.gov has done here at Mass and Huntington. Due to construction the 4 lane road with bike lanes had to be narrowed. BTD decided to prioritize protecting bikes and peds and implemented a road diet in both directions to 1 lane.

Last night we celebrated the opening of our new dedicated bus lane for the 8 bus on Denny by doing the obvious thing: racing it again. Last summer, Seattleites raced the bus on foot and beat it. This time around, with the lane up and running, it wasn’t even close.

Guys, this is for real. Senate GOP and the administration want to pass a law that outlaws bikelanes on the 160K mile National Highway System. Imagine if adding protected bikelanes to many arterials would suddenly be against the law. Let’s not allow this.

I'm hearing some concerns up about implementing "no turn on red" as a default policy in Seattle, so it's worth remembering that allowing turns on red only saves "1-5 seconds" on average for 🚗 drivers, meanwhile it increases 🚶🏼 crashes 60% and 🚴🏾‍♀️ crashes 100%. Well unfortunately NTOR compliance is typically follow the leader. People in front of the lines are usually the only ones who check and then everyone just assumes. But, on the bright side, if the first car stops, it’s self enforcing. As a designer, I make the restriction as obviously as possible.

Nearly got taken out by a jeep wagoneer turning right on red illegally over a two-way bike lane. Thankfully I wasn’t going too fast, but scary to think about how many drivers just remain unaware of how important our laws are for preventing crashes.

Love this quick build turn hardening island on Broadway in Cambridge!
Flex posts mark a turn hardening island on Broadway in Cambridge. Sunny photo with trees and in a residential community. Green traffic signals, a walk sign and a no turn on red sign exist at the intersection. The road is 2 lanes, one in each direction. Both directions have a bike lane, parking is off the curb. Both sides of the street have flex post separated lanes

A coupla things here: 1) People, by and large, obey the law 2) No Turn On Red is self-enforcing. One good citizen stopping as required, prevents other people in the queue from breaking the law. This has a compounding effect. 3) This is purely an argument between driver convenience & ped safety. 🧵
