The Ontario govt took $60M out of public education and handed it to Staples. Tomorrow, 80K elementary teachers each get $750 of the misappropriated money to buy overpriced classroom supplies at an 🇺🇸 corporation. Please remember this the next time Captain Canada tells you to #BuyCanadian. #OntEd

Althia Raj is doing some of the most important reporting out there right now, exposing how Carney is dismantling any semblance of Canada’s progressive values. Pharmacare, child care, now the environment… Please, pay attention. He’s eviscerating environmental laws worse than Harper. Than HARPER!!!
Screenshot of an article by Althia Raj: “Opinion | Mark Carney runs roughshod over the environment:
'It's worse than what Harper did'”Excerpt from Althia’s article reads:

“Prime Minister Mark Carney plans to make it easier to kill off endangered species, pollute waterways and risk human health, all in the name of fast-tracking private-sector development projects.
For a prime minister who dismissed progressive Liberal MPs concerns over spending on child care, health care and pharmacare during a caucus meeting this week, Friday's announcement on streamlining infrastructure project approvals is a further indication the party is moving to the right, further than anything Liberals have seen, and a giant call to action to all Canadians who care about the environment.”Excerpt from Althia’s article reads:

“"It's shocking," Anna Johnston, a staff lawyer at West Coast Environmental Law, told the Star. "This would represent by far the worst evisceration of environmental law in Canadian history, far worse than what happened under Prime Minister (Stephen) Harper's government in 2012."
"It's worse than what Harper did, I agree," said Steven Guilbeault, the Liberal MP and former environment minister. "This goes beyond what Harper proposed when he was in power, yes, that's true"
If the federal government's proposed changes go ahead, Guilbeault said it will mean "we will have no way of evaluating or understanding what are the human health and environment impacts of projects we are approving - and that the main criteria to evaluate projects moving forward, if this is adopted, is going to be economic development and nothing else will matter."
Phil Pothen, a land-use, planning, environmental and administrative lawyer at Environmental Defence, said the government's proposal would "grant any company or project the government chooses a blank cheque to just drive entire species to extinction or extirpation.”

🇱🇧 In the town of Tallousa, near the Israeli border, in the Marjeyoun District of Nabatieh Governorate, 62-year-old Ahmad Tarmas received a call yesterday from someone identifying as the Israeli army. He asked whether Tarmas wished to die alone, or with his family. He chose to face death by himself and left the home he was in. Minutes later, a drone strike killed him in his car.

Similar incidents have occurred in southern Lebanon, with victims receiving “death calls” before being assassinated by Israel, journalist Radwan Mortada writes.

“Do you want to die alone? or with your family?”

Journalist Radwan Mortada recounted the story of 62-year-old martyr Ahmad Tormos from the town of Tallousa, south Lebanon, who was killed yesterday after receiving a direct call from the Israeli occupation army giving him an impossible choice: die alone, or die with those around him.

Without hesitation, Ahmad chose to die alone and save his family. He drove away from them so the strike would not hit their home. Moments later, an Israeli drone fired two missiles at his car, killing him.

Mortada noted that similar “death calls” have reportedly been made to others in southern Lebanon, where men chose to walk toward death alone rather than allow their loved ones to be targeted.

Ahmad had previously lost his son Hassan, who was martyred two years earlier.

Dr. Bishara Bahbah, Palestinian-American academic and political activist who has served as an informal backchannel mediator between the Trump administration, Hamas, and the Palestinian Authority, told Al Jazeera Mubasher that the Rafah crossing restrictions and daily killings in Gaza follow from the fact that “the U.S. administration is currently preoccupied with Iran,” with recent meetings with Israeli leaders “focused solely on Iran.”

At the same time, he insists that “the U.S. president is very committed to the success of the peace process and reconstruction in Gaza,” even as Israeli violations are ignored.

Bahbah noted that Hamas’s weapons are the central barrier to reconstruction, yet “from October 9 until now, no party has spoken with Hamas about this issue,” despite Hamas being “ready to sit and negotiate,” he said.

He described U.S. decision-making as “very difficult and concentrated in certain individuals, not within institutions.”

He also claimed that escalating military deployments toward Iran signal likely war, saying no country sends aircraft carriers “without intending to use force,” adding, “if I were a betting man, I would say Iran will be struck.”

⭕️ Sharif Abdel Kouddous calls claims that the Rafah crossing has meaningfully reopened a political mirage.

What’s now being celebrated as an “opening,” including by the European Union, Sharif says, is a tightly controlled trickle. On the first day, only 5 critically ill Palestinians were allowed to leave Gaza, with 2 companions each, despite more than 20,000 people, including 4,500 children, urgently needing medical care.

Just 12 Palestinians, mostly women and children, were allowed back in. Returnees described hours-long interrogations, handcuffing, blindfolding, confiscation of belongings, humiliation, and threats after being transferred by the Israel-backed Abu Shebab militia to Israeli checkpoints.

That night, as winter storms lashed Gaza with cold winds and torrential rain, his family was shivering in a battered tent in Deir al-Balah where they had been displaced after fleeing Beit Lahia in northern Gaza

“It was a night of rain and wind. We were up all night, his mother and I,” Mohammed’s father, Maher Bassiouni, told Drop Site. “At 4 a.m., the wind and rain calmed a little and me and his mother slept a bit. I woke up at 6 a.m. and I found the boy dead.”

He spoke holding his son’s lifeless body wrapped in a purple blanket. “We belong to God and to him we shall return. God is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs. I have nothing more to tell you. He is one year old. Today is his birthday. January 13th is his birthday, the day he died.”

Mohammed is the seventh child to die from hypothermia since the onset of winter, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, including four since the beginning of the year—among them a baby just seven days old and a four-year-old girl. Another 25 Palestinians have been crushed to death as storms caused damaged buildings and walls to collapse on families seeking shelter inside or in tents nearby.Israel’s continued strangulation of essential supplies during winter has left hundreds of thousands of Palestinians shivering in the wet and cold and nearly three dozen dead. The reason this infant and at least 17 other children have frozen to death in Gaza is because
@POTUS
,
@JDVance
,
@SteveWitkoff
, and
@SecRubio
 are backing Netanyahu’s plan to force Palestinians out of Gaza by deliberately denying shelter and other life-essential aid to 2 million displaced Palestinians.

Tents and other winterized shelter supplies for 1.3 million people are sitting in UN trucks just hundreds of meters from the border. The United States and Israel are blocking their entry so Gaza remains unlivable, setting the conditions for what Israel calls “voluntary migration” when the Rafah crossing is finally opened.

That crossing, Gaza’s only gateway to the rest of the world, has remained closed for the last three months despite the ceasefire agreement in which Israel committed to reopen it.

Drop Site spoke with Eliza, 27, a Brooklyn resident who held up a photo of 5-year-old Palestinian child Hind Rajab throughout the event. Eliza said she supports Mayor Zohran Mamdani but wanted to make clear that political victories should not eclipse the genocide unfolding in Gaza. Holding the image, she said, was also a way to confront what she described as avoidance by media and elected officials, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders. “We shouldn’t really be celebrating during a genocide,” she said, pointing to the violence Palestinians continue to endure.
