4. Passing #Heraldecember2025 #heraldry (A second day of bonus shield!)
Got a bit carried away. There are two paintings today. First is Sable, a Pissant passant proper fimbriated argent. More simply, a black shield with an ant on it, the ant is coloured normally and has a white edge all round it. 'Passant' in heraldry refers to a beast in a walking pose, side-on, and is of course also French for 'passing'.

The second shield is black-ish, with two white hands, one passing a golden baton to the other - proof, if any were needed, that hands are difficult (but who is that mysterious person being passed the baton?). yes i know the hand receiving should be a *right* hand and not a left hand for it to make sense.

#Heraldecember2025 3 | Cavalry The motto “fumus ante ignis” is my tentative Latin translation of “smoke before fire,” the phrase indicating that white starts a game of chess. #heraldry #heraldecember
A heraldic crest drawn in ink and copic markers, set at an angle with a white chess piece king's crown set above it. The shield is checkered in black and red, and has two white chess knights facing each other. A motto scroll curls in a circle around and behind the crown, reading FUMUS ANTE IGNIS.

3/ When choosing their coat of arms, the municipality opted for something simple and striking: a golden trilobite on blue, with the flag taking the form of a banner of arms. It is a clear way of highlighting what makes the place unique...

2/ ...and major nobles. During the rule of the Schwarzenbergs, the locals took part in anti-serfdom uprisings that were brutally suppressed. Skryje is a world-class fossil site, largely thanks to the cataloguing work of the French engineer Joachim Barrande, whose name is well known in Czechia.

🧵 The fourth entry in my trilobite series comes from the municipality of Skryje. The first written mention of the village dates to 1229. Like many small Czech settlements, it changed hands repeatedly over the centuries, being traded, bought, sold, divided, reunited, and governed by various minor...

7/ The flag offers an interesting adaptation of the arms. The board is expressed as a divided white and green hoist stripe that curves into the rest of the flag, whose colours reflect both the charges and the overall palette. #vexillology #heraldry

SoaringAven @soaringaven.bsky.social · 29/11/2025
6/ The blue trilobite refers to the rich fossil deposits in the local limestone, while the sour cherry blossom recalls the long tradition of growing sour cherries, evidenced by several sour-cherry-related place names in the village.
110
SoaringAven @soaringaven.bsky.social · 29/11/2025
5/ Documentation also cites it as a reference to an endangered butterfly found in the area, the Meleager’s blue. The two charges in the centre add further symbolism.
110
SoaringAven @soaringaven.bsky.social · 29/11/2025
4/ White represents the local limestone quarries, green reflects Málkov’s natural surroundings, and blue is taken from the arms of the historical nobility who once owned the land.
110
SoaringAven @soaringaven.bsky.social · 29/11/2025
3/ The blazon, however, refers to it as a board and then specifies the shape, likely because it is not immediately recognisable as a window. The colours carry specific meanings as well.
110
SoaringAven @soaringaven.bsky.social · 29/11/2025
2/ Its coat of arms is a curious one. At first glance, the strange curved counterchanged field in the centre stands out. This shape represents the local church, taken directly from the form of one of its windows.
110
SoaringAven @soaringaven.bsky.social · 29/11/2025
🧵 The third municipality in my trilobite series is Málkov in Central Bohemia. A small community of around ninety inhabitants, Málkov is a typical Bohemian agricultural village. Depending on the source, it dates back either to the eleventh or the fourteenth century.

SoaringAven @soaringaven.bsky.social · 27/11/2025
6/ The arms and flag were designed by the heraldist Jiří Louda, author of the national coats of arms of Czechia and previously of the Czechoslovak Federative Republic. The municipal symbols were granted in 2001.
010
SoaringAven @soaringaven.bsky.social · 27/11/2025
5/ The green field features a plough blade, a typical Czech heraldic charge, representing the historical village of Čelechovice proper and its agricultural past, a recurring theme throughout Hanakia.
110
SoaringAven @soaringaven.bsky.social · 27/11/2025
4/ A more unexpected religious link appears in the figure of the trilobite, representing the historical settlement of Kaple. The settlement developed around its namesake, a hilltop chapel built of limestone, a rock common in the area and often rich in fossils.
110
SoaringAven @soaringaven.bsky.social · 27/11/2025
3/ The town’s connection to the Olomouc Diocese, specifically to the historical village of Studenec, is reflected in the three piles in chief. Their number also symbolises the three historical villages that form the modern municipality.
110
SoaringAven @soaringaven.bsky.social · 27/11/2025
2/ The village is first mentioned in the 12th century as royal property. It later passed through various noble houses until, in 1500, it became church property.

SoaringAven @soaringaven.bsky.social · 27/11/2025
🧵 The second arms and flag in my trilobite series belong to the municipality of Čelechovice na Hané. The name itself suggests its location in the fertile ethno-geographical region of Hanakia (Haná), sometimes referred to as the breadbasket of Czechia.
131
SoaringAven @soaringaven.bsky.social · 26/11/2025
The town received a flag in 2008 and sensibly chose the trilobite for it, resulting in a simple and distinctive design. (6/6)

Above the trilobite are two nails symbolising the iron industry, and in the left field there is a tower on a wooded rock referring to the local historical fortification Plešivec. (5/6)

The discoveries were significant enough that when Jince was elevated to market town status in 1900 by Emperor Franz Joseph I, the fossil found its way into the arms. (4/6)
110
SoaringAven @soaringaven.bsky.social · 26/11/2025
For centuries it was a centre of iron mining and forging, producing everything from kitchenware to cannons and shot. It also became known in the nineteenth century for its trilobite fossils. (3/6)
110
SoaringAven @soaringaven.bsky.social · 26/11/2025
Jince is actually a step above an ordinary municipality because it is a "městys", usually translated as a "market town". The area has a long history, with settlement reaching back to the Stone Age. (2/6)
110
SoaringAven @soaringaven.bsky.social · 26/11/2025
Lately I have been looking into unusual charges in Czech municipal heraldry and ended up finding five coats of arms in the country that feature a trilobite. Naturally I had to emblazon all of them. This one is the first, belonging to the town of Jince. (1/6)
