My article on Yoasobi’s “Idol” is now on Music Theory Online! It considers the role of genre-topics in narrating this song, the opening theme for the 1st season of anime Oshi no ko. Rap, trap, singer-songwriter style, J-pop otaku, and Eurobeat combine to tell the tragic, unknowable story of Ai.

39 years ago today, Depeche Mode released the "Music for the Masses," their sixth album, engineered/co-produced by Dave Bascombe. It was also their first fully digital recording. 39 years earlier, Frank Sinatra released "Christmas Songs by Sinatra," his third album. Yes, we're all very old.

I think it's really interesting how the Fleetwood Mac revival has led to this weird retconning of the complaint about their music being that it was too hip and obscure instead of too smooth, polished, safe and adult oriented

🎂🎂🎂Happy 27th Birthday, Dreamcast!🎂🎂🎂 I'll never forget the depth of your game library and how wonderfully diverse and creative your peripherals were

An illustration of Sonic holding the Dreamcast Twin Sticks next to Ulala from Space Channel 5 Part 2 holding a Dreamcast controller with a Seaman microphone, with Beat from Jet Grind Radio behind them holding a fishing controller. They are all intertwined by the cords of their peripherals, while behind them is a giant Dreamcast glowing gently over them. In the background are floating Chao, Light Chao, and Dark Chao, Amigo from Samba de Amigo, and a Chu Chu and Kapu Kapu. Also Seaman looking upset at Ulala, maybe Ulala said some crass words that he didn't enjoy

it's not weird at all to think any computer/AI that demonstrates the same level of reasoning and intentionality as a human should be treated as a person. we just have not seen anything even close to close to close to close to that yet. all we've seen is fancy pattern recognition.

The idea that we are fundamentally averse to the idea that machines can think is BS. Human beings are actually very much inclined to believe machines can think. Our sci-fi sense of wonder is being exploited by charlatans. We do not accept PR and propaganda that are wholly unsupported by the facts.

Legitimately one of our biggest collective failures as a media body is allowing The Game Awards to have this kind of gravity. I don't give a shit how it works. I don't give a shit how many people watch it. We fucked up centering a small corner of our coverage to this specific event.

agree with all of this and just want to say I've long believed that nostalgia, given proper consideration, is way more than just pining for how things were at some point in the past. it's a connection to the temporality inherent in the whole of every moment of our lives.

a thing about people who don't know much about music theory or song structure is they can be convinced of plagiarism in damn near anything and can also be very selective about who they accuse. everyone accuses Elastica of stealing from Wire but no one accuse Wire of stealing from The Kinks.
