it isn't the only way to force them to do that, but even if it were, trying to motivate people to vote by scaring them into abandoning their principles doesn't accomplish that.

I'm in my 40s and have lived in California my whole life. trust me when I say that In-N-Out has always had long lines. always. it's a genuinely decent, reasonably priced fast-food burger. that may not sound like much but when even a McD's meal is north of $10 now that's a big draw for people.

Katsuya Terada art of Virtua Fighter boss character Dural reflecting on her defeat in the first game by Akira Yuki.

Dural, a liquid metal woman, sits in a dark room full of ruined machinery

Dural projects a triangle from her forehead

Akira Yuki is projected on the wall from the triangle, stanced up for the final blow

Akira delivers a hellacious elbow strike that snaps apart even the projected recap

noticing and feeling that disconnect is normal and rational. when an attempt to reach out (even to say something perfunctory like "buy this!") turns out to have no human involvement beyond typing a few phrases or was run through a yassifier and made into featureless simulacra, that fuckin sucks!

something I think also needs to be said more often is that it's not weird to go from liking to disliking something upon finding out it was made with AI. creative work is a powerful way of connecting with other people. learning that a person didn't create something severs that connection.

it contains as much GY!BE, Pixies and My Bloody Valentine as it does any metal band. other acts experimented that way before (hello Napalm Death) but they didn't have Devin's hidden talent of announcing his influences without making us feel like he brought them to the party without telling anyone.

this really is a strange album. it sounds and feels like a metal album in all the ways one should expect while being catchy, moody and confessional in the manner of an 8 on pitchfork years before pitchfork even pretended to care about metal at all.

soakrates @soakrates.bsky.social · 12/10/2026

listened to this over the weekend and it got me thinking. a lot of people try to get into metal by looking for its equivalent to their favorite critically lauded or influential indie/experimental rock albums. I don't think it works that way but if anyone asks I always point them to "Terria."

"Terria" turned 25 recently. still the album that I think best captures metal at its weirdest crossroads: destined for widespread critical success but forever uncool; increasingly introspective but irresistibly silly; wandering into wider musical territory but refusing to leave its gear behind.
