David’s Flat by Muriel Lewis c.1967 in the art therapy studio at Netherne Hospital where she was compelled to live. Her works often depict scenes from a materially affluent life outside hospital, often empty of people, with disquiet seeming to lurk just under the surface of comfortable surroundings

It has three bay windows with window boxes, to their left, a bright yellow front fort under a portico with white columns and two smaller leaded windows above it. To the left of that is a tall tree in green leaf and round the front of the building is a red brick wall topped with a neat, low green box hedge.
The building is rendered in cream and the pavement and roof are dark grey. Above is a pale grey sky and the windows show nothing of the interior, displaying instead the reflection of the gloomy overcast weather.
The feeling of the painting is melancholic and slightly sinister; despite the slightly stiff but pretty, almost storybook style of it, there is an uneasy atmosphere, perhaps from the absence of human life and the windows of the building showing no inner life of the rooms behind them, instead reflecting the flat grey day implied by the mildly threatening sky above the house
