Everyone’s mad at Danny Trejo for signing on to Ben Shapiro’s pro-ICE movie but now his son reveals how Shapiro’s team tricked an old man into doing this 😡
For anyone seeing this shit with my dad...

He was booked on a film, it's not pro-ice, it's not overtly pro anything. His agent described it as "a complicated story about a complicated time, where everyone looks bad except you, the hardworking Mexican shop owner who just wants peace.”

He jumped at the idea of playing a good guy.

About 2 weeks into shooting everyone, including us, found out Ben Shapiro was involved.

My 82 year old dad has never heard of Ben Shapiro, I had to explain to him who that is, and what kind of guy he is.

My dad contractually can't bad mouth him, the film, or walk away without being sued for breach of contract. He couldn't even release the statement he wanted to.

It's fucked up. He's handcuffed to this stupid project, and swaths of people have instantly turned their back on him without knowing any of the facts.

Ben Shapiro got Mexicans to abandon one of their heroes, got his own name to the top of google's searches, and made us look like angry fools lacking any nuance. He wins.

An IBM PC AT, if I remember right. It only had DOS, no mouse, and no built-in 3.5" floppy drive; my dad connected one with a serial cable. I played a shitload of Treasure Mountain! on it.
An IBM PC AT. Two 5.25" floppy drives.

Yesterday, instead of doomscrolling, I framed and attached the windows and mounted the slide on my kid's new swingset and that was a much better choice, even with the sore knees and back.

Speaking as a physicist, there's absolutely no known interaction that would affect a baby to the extent demanded by the drastic differences between signs. From a biology perspective, since our genetics are set at conception and are a major part of us along with our experiences, why focus on birth?

The trick is to marry someone who, when she says "get dinner and see where the night takes us" means "let's order takeout, fool around on the couch because the house is finally empty, and then knock out those last couple of loyalty missions in Mass Effect 2." Unrelated, I'm never leaving my wife.

I don't know why a novel about a Naval Academy professor accidentally interrupting an attempted assassination of the Prince and Princess of Wales by a splinter IRA faction was a comfort read for me at like 13, but it was.

His later books got real weird with politics and needed to be edited with an axe, but The Hunt for Red October and The Cardinal of the Kremlin are still absolute bangers.

Quick Google search: UW Madison states explicitly that unpaid visiting scholars still have official affiliation. UNC requires background checks for unpaid scholars. Ohio State would have a record of a J-1 visa.

This is not true in the US. I was a visiting professor and I was paid the same as other full-time faculty at the institution. Some visiting researchers may be unpaid by the institution, but HR would still have a record of them for background checks, email and ID access, visas, and so on.

They're called leitmotifs, the smallest cohesive themes that represent a character or concept. They've been a thing in opera since Monteverdi, though they're mostly associated with Wagner. Beyond that, most Western classical forms put major emphasis on repetition and development of musical motifs.

Some of us actually are academics and yes, we *do* actually give a shit about ethics in academia in general, no matter how niche you make his field sound. In fact, it seems to me that if you're doing research into the sociology of education, ethical research is extra important!

I have bad news for the people that think college students are broadly rejecting AI. Based on the slop I got this semester, there are *plenty* who will boo commencement speakers from the tech industry, then go and submit their AI-generated final papers without a hint of shame or irony.

I got some in elementary school (91-96), but it was *mostly* through Cub Scouts. Mostly ribbons that said "I Participated"; one or two cheapo trophies. I think most of us knew they were bullshit back then, but in retrospect it *was* kind of nice to be acknowledged.

Every night, my wife and I make our three-year-old stop playing, put his jammies on, brush his teeth, go potty, and get into bed. This is often against his will and is therefore analogous to rape, *if* you're a deeply stupid person.

Problem set grades used to be reasonably well-correlated with exam grades in my classes. This is no longer the case. Over the past few years they've more or less decoupled from one another. In one class, there was actually a negative correlation between them! So, most of them.
