The packing for 12 might be more sad than this is upsetting though, just three rows of 4 in a 4x4 with an empty row

A Virginia mother was detained by ICE after she was unable to immediately recite her Social Security number during a traffic stop, despite reportedly presenting identification and immigration documents. Her teenage daughter recorded the encounter and said goons became aggressive.

im still kind of skeptical about a major hack vs taking advantage of bad api or leaked endpoint/keys happening accidentally but i would be very surprised if 5.3 hasnt been used in intentional exploitation already

they were even aiming at ns after having the big ns result lol

oh yea its not a grievance that im significantly bothered by, and it would be useless to me, but id be interested to see what other people had to say even if its very likely nothing much

Bark @smorc.bsky.social · 5h
definitely not an expert opinion or anything ive thought too hard about but the bullshit (laudatory) results like integer multiplication in n log(n)^(1-2^-182) and similar make me up my estimation for p=np but in a very ugly and mostly useless way

it'd be interesting to see if theres any kind commonality between the 3200 that failed to make progress (which also might be why oai wants to keep them private so anthropic cant also look for that to improve on)

this layout, and the layout for 11 were both found by humans, the ai just proved that there isnt a better solution for 11 lurking even deeper in tweaking i dont even know how much computer was used to find it the original citation is J. Bidwell, 1998, private communication, an undergrad at u hawaii

Bark @smorc.bsky.social · 5h
technically unlike with 11 (thanks to the ai above) we dont actually know for certain this one is optimal, its just the best weve found, but it rules out any patterns humans would consider nice and is most likely optimal

Bark @smorc.bsky.social · 5h
this is the optimal packing for 17

seems like what they did with ns was shitty (wanted to deny anthropic employee another win, and spent a ton to do it) but they didnt outright steal it, the anthropic collaboration was further away than they expected based on the rumors

Bark @smorc.bsky.social · 6h
oai is claiming 3 hours per problem on average, with 4000 problems tried to get these ~700 results, so 12000 hours of compute total, so a lot less than the NS result

Bark @smorc.bsky.social · 6h
apparently this heuristic failed assuming all these results are true, it just took people longer than i expected to find the good ones

Finite time blowup for an averaged three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation
I’ve just uploaded to the arXiv the paper “Finite time blowup for an averaged three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation”, submitted to J. Amer. Math. Soc.. The main purpose of this…

Bark @smorc.bsky.social · 6h
this one was from a tao's earlier work on navier-stokes no? i seem to recall reading about trying to do this as a mechanism for proving blowup

i pointed GLM 5.3, which is undoubtably less good at these tasks than sol/astra/internal oai model, at a paper i found that had poised 8 conjectures extending their work, and it crunched through all of them in like 6 hours (at the cost of all my usage)
010
Bark @smorc.bsky.social · 7h
im not even going to waste the tokens asking an llm to tell me if any of those results are particularly important (the release format + no reactions online seems like a good heuristic that theyre all fairly minor) given that, this really doesnt seem that surprising at all
110
Bark @smorc.bsky.social · 8h
kind of funny they were hand wringing about wanting to release their results in a better way and then just ultimately deciding on dropping this

i love that bouie is actually producing video commentary rather than just lamenting the fact that video is necessary to reach a huge audience that written commentary just never will

hmmmm asked glm a question about the feasibility of an idea i had, and it told me it probed a .gov sites api and it actually returns more data than i expected, but when i tried to double check you have to apply for an api key so how was it querying am i about to be misalignment example

i am not sure if she would vote properly in any other race, so im just going to hope she stays at a neutral 0 but not being in the house with her 80yr old dad with 24/7 fox is a real boon, because shes a decent person who just really is susceptible to all the propaganda

my girlfriends mom doesnt really vote and is largely ignorant but was pro trump in 2024, and moved here to texas 6 months ago and all she knows about the senate race is "ken paxton is the guy who stole millions of dollars, but all they can say about the 'rico' guy is hes weird"

the full ad isnt much better, its just about him getting a few convictions, and some tiktok case that even seeing the ad like 35 times (in my periphery admittedly) i still dont understand its all about "protecting kids" and pushing back on the adam hoffman stuff
