Sad to hear of Wendell Berry’s passing. He’s been integral to my formation. Sharing this essay in grateful remembrance. #wendellberry substack.com/home/post/p-...

Really like this, David. Showed it to my wife and she smiled and said "I know why you like this." I'm not too keen on standing at concerts, either 😊.

Thanks Jan! Even in the moment I just shook my head and laughed at the thought of “what the hell else could go wrong?”

@rfsmith.bsky.social I manged to get it sort of how I wanted it, so here is my second offering for #RealPeople 🙏 #PromptCombo #Poetry
Poetry Readings
(or Why Must We Always Ascend? )

It always seems to begin with stairs.
A winding and steep pilgrimage.

Up staircases that spiral like plot twists,
past signs that say mind your head,
past faded pictures of the glory days.
Into elderly, cramped rooms,
scented with the memories of spilt drinks.
Filled with mismatched chairs,
filled with mismatched people.

You jostle for a place and settle down.
And then the poets rise.
One by one, they stand.
Some with the poise of seasoned magicians,
others with the tremble of someone
showing you their heart,
hastily wrapped in a Tesco receipt.

They speak of grief and pigeons,
of mothers and mushrooms,
of heartbreak and the bus to the Post Office.
They find wonder in the mundane,
alchemy in the overlooked.

Not every poem is polished.
Some are gloriously lopsided,
like a cake baked with too much hope
and not enough flour.
Each one a revelation.
A glimpse into someone else’s sky.

There you sit, awestruck.
Not because every line is perfect,
but because every voice is brave.
Because they climbed the stairs too,
and let you look through
a cracked, glorious, unexpected window.

You listen.
You wonder.
And leave lighter.

Reminded of how many ways
there are to be human.

Love this, Emily. Makes me smile at all the memories I've "gifted" my own children. We joke about the laughs they'll share at my funeral!

Oh wow...thank you so much, Emily. So glad you found a connection with this. It was a chance meeting. Helping a friend pick up a piece of wood working equipment from this old man. He was so proud to show us his farm scene and reveal a bit about his tough upbringing. But always smiling.

Red pistachio shells in the Marlboro ashes! That very image takes me back to my grandparents. Though my grandpa smoked Winstons. We put the shells in his ashtray.

Thank you, Jen. Really appreciate your kind comments. And yes, the metaphor was indeed intended. A little iconoclastic thumb in the eye for all the misguided "patriots."

Love the progression here, Emily. And, of course, your metaphors. "buds that sit tight as fists closed as a shuttered mind." Describes a lot of people I know 😊

Really like this, Andy. The coopting of religion for personal gain. But I especially like your last line: "small people scared of who we might become." For me, this gets at people's unwillingness to look beyond others' ideas and to embrace what we all possess already.
