Spectacle: an object of contempt. Unbalanced opinion synthesis in real time. Public health, systems, complaining, first drafts?

Until we wrestle with the primary issue, our economic system, which produces and normalizes this weird existence, we will see no lasting solution. Just people making a buck, spewing the same tired shit, for a new reader to get excited about while another person kills themselves.

These articles are everywhere and say nothing. They are a sign of “progress.” Of advancing suicide and MH. Yet, at every juncture, from the weird normalization of crumbled public infrastructure begging for donations to the wealthy “leaders” building solutions; we feel no change. It is all spectacle.

It ends with a question, “what [are] we prepared to do differently.” Based on the article, nothing. And that’s the issue. Leadership in this space lacks the imagination to do things differently. These articles, that people forward to me, do nothing but act as propaganda to maintain inaction.

I think the most valuable points, which are short asides throughout the article, include 1) systems design, 2) iIteration, 3) advancing new perspectives. Yet, the dialogue falls short of doing anything with these overtures. Instead satisfied with a “national opportunity” to do something.

So how is the article and it’s bench of experts at the mental health summit “rethinking” suicide? It’s unclear. Maybe by asking “different questions.” Or maybe it’s via Dr. Moutier’s call to be more “vulnerable.”

Slug Rug @slugrug.bsky.social · 2h
The article interviews suicide’s favorite lived experience doctor, Dr. Moutier (the chief medical officer at one of the largest US suicide prevention agencies AFSP). I’ll note, AFSP is essentially committed to maintaining its revenues and not really addressing suicide but that’s another story.

Next, we find ourselves on a website that is ostensibly committed to healing people. And, we find it normal (in fact raising the point I’m about to may seem silly its so normalized) that the article “rethinking” men’s MH has two constantly flashing “donate” buttons with cute little hearts.

That is, there are environmental elements that contribute to a desire to die. Here we have an article that is “rethinking men’s mental health and suicide.” Let’s set aside for a minute that these things are tenuous to connect, especially in the headline. People already conflate MH and suicide.

Slug Rug @slugrug.bsky.social · 2h
Let’s talk about suicide. We currently understand suicide as a social phenomena. That is, it is not purely genetic mental illness. It is “driven” by material reality. “I am a burden on my relationships because of x,y,z” or “I can’t take this physical pain with no medical recourse anymore.”

Need to clearly articulate my thoughts concerning this type of article but until that time… I think these articles are great at illuminating the astonishing failures of our current environment. We have the largest mental health teaching hospital in Canada reporting on men’s mental health. So what?

Beyond “just talk”: Rethinking men’s mental health and suicide prevention in Canada
Experts gathered at CAMH’s Men’s Mental Health Summit to explore how Canada can better prevent suicide, reach men earlier and design mental health services around the people who use them.

boy Trump fucked the American auto industry. first he yanks their EV subsidies, leading them to slash production and write off tens of billions in investment, then he jacks up the price of oil by 50%, leading to skyrocketing EV demand going almost entirely to China bc GM et al left the market

Submit a comment or attend a protest if you are able. This merger will do wonders for those who have investments in these companies. My guess is that ain’t you. Get at it.

Said this for years, along with others. The majority of fraternities function to place unqualified “bros” into positions of power, insulate them from accountability, and normalize abuse of the other.

One of the symptoms of overshoot (according to the Limits to Growth authors) is that humans/the economy have to start doing work that was once provided for free from nature.

Dude literally says “if you left and the employer couldn’t find anyone else at the rate they were offering then they’d raise your pay.” Unbelievable what endless levels of propaganda and mythology making can do to a brain.

Workers literally asking for a few dollars raise once, while the c suite has seen 5 to 20 percent raises year after year. Neighbors “I wish they would find another job, I’m tired of hearing the megaphone and honking.” Fuck man, these workers don’t want to be out here shit.

ICE cannot do what it’s doing without local law enforcement. They need their manpower and infrastructure. That means if you want to stop ICE you are going to have to confront police collaboration and police power. I’m sorry but progressive hopes of avoiding this conflict are a recipe for failure.

I’ll have convos with “lived experience” PhDs talking about their success in working with “both sides.” To say this you must have no eyes or sense of what success looks like. To dilude yourself into believing you’ve moved the needle because you published a paper or a rep. let you grovel. Spectacle.

It’s really crazy to speak with folks ostensibly dedicated to addressing suicide, many of whom have experienced this devastating loss, and yet receive blank stares when you begin a real convo about what drives despair. What CREATES limited support. The mechanisms of immiseration.

“This is further evidence that global media has been captured by the far-right.” Incorrect. This framing suggests removing those who identify with the “far-right” would resolve our problems. Far from it. It is the media’s class allegiance, the owning wealthy, that should be our target.

If we survive the next two years… call for an immediate end to all meaningless task jobs, the now unemployed labor redirected towards civic engagement to rebuild what was lost and/or never was, funded by those we imprison and whose wealth we liberate.
