‘the nature of memory became ever more fascinating: the way it keeps certain moments vividly frozen while obliterating others, the way in which it endlessly reshapes the palimpsest that is our life story.’ Venda Goldsworthy in the latest @slightlyfoxed.bsky.social
Text says noticing the gaps in Vladimir's account. Turgenev's depiction of the nature of memory became ever more fascinating: the way it keeps certain moments vividly frozen while obliterating others, the way in which it endlessly reshapes the palimpsest that is our life story.
'You could omit anything if you knew that you omitted, and the omitted part would strengthen the story and make people feel something more than they understood, Hemingway wrote. It is a lesson he might have learned while boxing with Turgenev.
VESNA GOLDSWORTHY'S novel Iron Curtain was one of the New Yorker Best Books of 2023.

Indeed, the seasons change all too quickly! It always brings to mind that Dr Seuss quote: 'How did it get so late so soon? It's night before it's afternoon. December is here before it's June. My goodness how the time has flewn.' We hope issue 91 brings some cheer during the cooler months ahead!🦊

'Many people mistakenly believe that having a laugh means that one is not taking things seriously. On the contrary There is no better way of approaching a grim and desperately serious topic, in my opinion, than by cracking a joke.' – Michele Hanson in @slightlyfoxed.bsky.social No.10
Text says 'Gibbons sensibly realized that laughing is, for some people, braver and more radical therapy than any obtained through psycho-analysis or counselling. Many people mistakenly believe that having a laugh means that one is not taking things seriously. On the contrary There is no better way of approaching a grim and desperately serious topic, in my opinion, than by cracking a joke.'

Sydney Smith on low spirits: 'Don't expect too much from human life - a sorry business at the best. Avoid...everything likely to excite feeling or emotion not ending in active benevolence.' quoted by Stephen Bayley in 'Taking the Short View' in the latest @slightlyfoxed.bsky.social
text says: 10th. Make no secret of your low spirits to your friends, but talk of them freely - they are always worse for dignified concealment. 9th. Attend to the effects tea and coffee produce upon you. 10th. Compare your lot with that of other people. 11th. Don't expect too much from human life - a sorry business at the best.12th. Avoid poetry, dramatic representations (except comedy), music, serious novels, melancholy, sentimental people, and everything likely to excite feeling or emotion, not ending in active benevolence. 13th. Do good, and endeavour to please everybody of every degree. 14th. Be as much as you can in the open air without fatigue.'
