just discovered a delightful website where you pick the venue and it shows crowdsourced photos of views from different seats aviewfrommyseat.com/photo/445964...

From what I understand: Instead of YOU having to prove that a tech company DIDN'T follow GDPR obligations, The tech companies now instead have to prove they actually DID follow GDPR. Burden of proof is on them. They cant just blanket deny everything. Huge if true! Nice one @iccl.bsky.social

LLMs have real and meaningful weaknesses and dangers associated with their use, which is part of why it's so galling that the loudest anti-LLM voices have less than zero interest in understanding what LLMs are good at and what they are bad at so they can make their case coherently.

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

New Seeds of Contemplation
Thomas Merton

What is this dimension of depth? It is the incorporation of the unknown
and of the unconscious into our daily life. Faith brings together the known
and the unknown so that they overlap: or rather, so that we are aware of
their overlapping. Actually, our whole life is a mystery of which very little
comes to our conscious understanding. But when we accept only what we
can consciously rationalize, our life is actually reduced to the most pitiful
limitations, though we may think quite otherwise.

Note: If you figuratively spin the wheel a few times, most of the stories end like "died in childbirth at 16", "died of tuberculosis at 8 months", "died of dysentery at 39", etc. The "About" page quotes Muriel Rukeyser, "The universe is made of stories, not of atoms". Most of these are sad ones. 2/2

Some highlights from packing up our old bookshelves
Cover of "Blacklisted! 411: The Official Hackers Magazine," Volume 6 Issue 4, Fall 2004. Photo shows a person at an old CRT computer wearing a paper grocery bag over their head with a face drawn on it. Cover lines read "Hacking With a Proxy Server," "Hacking a Wireless Router," "PDA Security," and "Defcon 2004 Recap."Book cover for "Masters of Deception: The Gang That Ruled Cyberspace" by Michelle Slatalla and Joshua Quittner. Orange background with a shadowy portrait of a person in sunglasses, overlaid with rows of random letters and numbers resembling a word-search grid. A Washington Post Book World blurb runs across the top.Illustrated book cover showing small red devil-like creatures in a medieval stone village. One devil reaches through a barred window toward a baby devil being carried by another devil, near a pitchfork and a cross mounted on the wall. Two more devil figures stand under a stone archway in the background, one lighting somethingBack cover of "FreeBSD Mastery: Jails," featuring a Midwest Book Review blurb, a "Confine Your Software" section with a bulleted list of topics (jail architecture, iocage toolkit, virtual networks, etc.), a joking blurb referencing "Git Commit Murder," the Tilted Windmill Press logo, price ($24.99), and ISBN barcode.

Cover of my new book, Deep Unlearning: The Rise of AI and The Radicalization of a Tech Idealist.

There are two concentric circles in the book, the left being circuits in black an white, and the right being a bunch of dots with orange accents. The cover background is cream. And the words are written in black except for "Un" which is in orange.

An effect of the AI debate on here is that researchers are finding genuinely useful ways to utilize LLMs in their research methods that are *reproducible* and *reliable.* The discourse makes it so anyone who does, usually won't talk about it because of worries over being dogpiled.

Two year anniversary of when I first posted this comic
Two panel comic. Panel 1: an anglerfish is washed up on the ocean shore, laying in the tide. It thinks to itself, “it’s so beautiful.” Panel 2: wide shot of the beach, rocky cliffs, and sky at sunset, with the anglerfish still laying in place. The anglerfish continues thinking to itself, “I might have never known.”
