😕 In FreeBSD 14.3, `pkg search ocaml` gives me ocaml-4.14.2. But `pkg search opam` gives me ocaml-opam-2.4.1. Newbie question. Do I install opam v2.4.1 first and hope it will install ocaml v5.x?

It's kind of funny that due to AI/LLMs these days another metric to rate #programming languages on has become "token efficiency". On the bright side - some of the beloved languages like #Clojure, #Ruby, #FSharp and #OCaml fared pretty well due to their expressive and compact syntax.

Stepped away from learning ocaml for a month and already ‘opam update’ found 7 packages to upgrade. The ecosystem is active.

Still struggling with ocaml ecosystem, but I just got a small something working. The resulting code is mind-bendingly compact and still easy to follow. 😘 Maybe ocaml will grow on me. 😍

Installing ocaml requires several disjointed steps. Each takes a rather long time, compared to other languages. The word that comes to mind is "ecosystem" with various CLIs to do different things. Well documented but still ...

A package I am exploring had to be build from source and it is in Crystal. So I played around with it. Compiled app performance seems good, but compile time is slower than Odin or Go. LSP support seems limited.

To my surprise, the Odin libraries that I have been depending on do not seem to work on FreeBSD. At least not out of the box. They worked fine on MacOS, so this is unexpected. Bummer. This despite odin-lang is available for `pkg install` in FreeBSD. Maybe I am doing this wrong?

Oh turned out there is compiler setting for optimisation. With the correct setting, Odin's executable is faster than Go's fib version. Makes sense.

Was bored yesterday, so I spent a bit of time downloading and experimenting with Odin. I tried out the fibonacci example. Surprisingly the executable does not run faster than the equivalent Go. Not surprisingly, the executable file size is much smaller than the equivalent Go.

Postponing email self-hosting again. All of the newer OSS all-in-one mail servers I found do not have good support / doc for FreeBSD yet. I have things to work on and email self-hosting is not on the priority list. 🛴
