Took advantage of the nice weather to go looking for the local(ish) platypus and got lucky. Delightful way to spend the afternoon.

Sad to hear that Patricio Guzmán has died. A remarkable filmmaker, with a poetic eye and a deep understanding of history and resistance, nature and emotion. Nostalgia For The Light is one of the best documentaries I've seen, and was just one of many great works in his career.

I did a somewhat deep dive into the recent OpenAI and Anthropic "hacks" for an upcoming interview. IMO, the AI companies are better off running with the "rogue AI" story because the real story is actually pretty embarrassing. Like making your Wi-Fi password "wifi" embarrassing. 🧵

I know this is not the biggest concern going these days, but it stresses me out that basically every artist/writer/critic is now expected to create their own tiny empire instead of getting paid by any existing entity to perform a job they've worked to get good at!!!!

Because the truth is, tech doesn't have an image problem. It doesn't have a message problem. It has an intention problem. What's wrong with the axe murderer who broke into my house is not that he hasn't successfully persuaded me to buy into his narrative. What's wrong is that he's trying to kill me with an axe. Similarly, when you launch a product that's designed to put millions of people out of work, block access to sources of verifiable truth, replace human creativity with slop, and lower the barriers to every sort of atrocity, the problem isn't that you haven't told the public a good story about those things. The problem is that you are trying to do them. (

An Iliad at STC deserves all of the raves its been getting. Brilliant performance by David Wenham; very clever staging that links back to the traditions it draws on; and a powerful retelling that links the original to the present day, and the ache that comes from telling the myth and reality of war.

There's a reason every other movie finds an excuse to remove a hero's mask/helmet asap. I know the canonical reasons here, but a blank helmet plus a stoic voice over makes for a dull character and a waste of an extremely charismatic actor (this was my complaint for the show too)

Obsession is worth the hype. One of the best horror debuts I've seen in ages. Brilliant lead performances (particularly Inde Navarrette), but also great use of light, top-notch editing, and a very smart script that makes excellent use of tension and discomfort, instead of relying on jump scares.
