And of course, it’s politically unpopular among Republicans on the mainland who don’t want 2 more senators, whereas Democrats are generally in favor. However, the new member of Congress for PR is a Dem who opposes statehood, so it’s not black and white. He says PR benefits from its current status

It’s a complicated political situation there with a long history. The anti-statehood argument is that PR has a unique tax status (most residents exempt from fed income tax) as well as a cultural/political identity (Spanish language, etc), both of which would change if it became a state

Abraham Joshua Hesher @skullwizard.bsky.social · 08/11/2024
Yeah, the fight boils down to political representation vs the argument that statehood would take away PR’s cultural identity (like its own delegation in the Olympics). It’s the first time in 20 years that the delegate will be opposed to statehood, but he’s a Dem who wants to expand federal benefits

It’s the seventh referendum they’ve held. The two main parties in PR have been fighting about the island’s status for decades

Abraham Joshua Hesher @skullwizard.bsky.social · 08/11/2024
In other words, it’s not solely because of bad forces like Trump that statehood might not come to pass, but because it’s a complicated political situation with a long history within PR as well as without

Abraham Joshua Hesher @skullwizard.bsky.social · 08/11/2024
The complication is that the presumptive resident commissioner in Congress is firmly opposed to statehood, and his party instructed voters to boycott the referendum so a huge number of ballots were left blank. Not to deflate hope but to say that we shouldn’t feel defeated if statehood doesn’t happen

We weren’t super close but my friend Rob was a really sweet guy who died way too young. He was friends with my sister in high school and I saw him go through some rough years before finding himself. I used to visit him in Oregon and he was an example of what great guys could be. Here’s to you, man

This is your annual reminder that in 2005 I saw Bobby "Boris" Pickett live when he was a surprise guest at a Rocket From The Crypt show. He sang one song ("Monster Mash") and prefaced it by saying, "Elvis said this song was the stupidest thing he ever heard, but he died on the toilet, so fuck him!"

I Work in Data Security. Is It a Problem That My Boss Believes in Lizard People?
I work in the I.T. department of a town government, where our small team is led by a director who is a fervent conspiracy theorist. In casual conversations, the director frequently discusses bizarre ideas in a hushed, serious manner, as if revealing hidden truths: lizard people infiltrating the federal government, the Rothschilds as vampiric blood drinkers and J.F.K. Jr. secretly controlling Trump with plans for a 2024 comeback.

This individual is responsible for managing and securing the municipal data of a very affluent town. The potential risks are alarming. It is not outside the realm of possibility that this alternate reality could compromise the director’s decision-making, potentially jeopardizing the security of our town’s sensitive information. When I’ve raised my concerns with both the mayor and the head of H.R., they’ve swiftly dismissed the issue and redirected the conversation.

Twist is that the likely next resident commissioner for PR in Congress is opposed to statehood. Unless this sinks his campaign

this is hilarious because you can look up Eugene Meyer on wikipedia and find out that he was an anti-New Deal partisan who absolutely forced his influence both on the opinion and news pages and even wrote his own editorializing "news" piece under an assumed name. It takes two seconds

I'm trying to find an old tweet from 2020 and coming across all these strange tweets just before most Americans realized covid was going to disrupt their lives too. What a wild fucking time.
March 11, 2020
Matt Novak: It amazes me that many Americans still don't understand how quickly this is going to go south without massive testing
You don't have to be psychic or take my word for it. Just fucking google
"Italy respirators" and entertain the idea that this could happen to your own country.

Italy has about 3.2 hospital beds per 1,000 citizens. The U.S. has about 2.8.
Italy is currently running out of hospital beds. You do the math.

That's a bit over the top. Italy has the second worst outbreak in the world. There's no reason to assume we are the next Italy.

This is honest, accurate framing. There’s an annoying tic a lot of news orgs have that says if Trump does something that obviously bad faith you have to pretend it’s good faith. “He worked a shift!” It is not unfair to a candidate to say something honest that is also unflattering

My journalistic opinion on covering Trump making dick jokes at rallies is that if you omit it because it seems declassé or salacious and it's house style to avoid that sort of thing, the institution needs to revisit house style, and stop worrying about manners.

a story, verbatim, just told by my mother-in-law to her grandsons over facetime
let me give you some halloween advice, little boys. dont get taffy in your hair. you might have to have a haircut right then and there. i remember the first time i got taffy stuck in my hair, it was patty jables fault. she also ate my fathers tree. she lived in that smallish house next door, not mrs whittaker's, the other one. she peeled the bark all off of it and ate it away. it was a miracle the thing survived. my dad was kind of mad! he said
"well why didn't you stop her" i said "well i had no earthly idea she was going to do that" i don't know what kind of tree it was. i don't know if she was hungry, or what. this was a long time ago. so that's my advice to you, boys. don't get taffy in your hair, and don't eat the insides of other people's trees
