Maybe I'm too much of a negativist, but I've always disliked the 'de-extinction' field. It all looks like one big grift that attracts charlatans and pretenders, and which is forever making false claims and promises that distract people from what's actually interesting about extinct animals.

Though dragons are stereotypically seen as the dominating predators of Tyrselon, the mangroves to the far south are often far too dense in tree cover for them to enter. Thus, two large reptiles take up the spot as top order carnivores.

The Mokobo Lizard, a 115 kilogram Teiid, are the top terrestrial predator of the southern coast. Long, flexible legs allow them to slip through dense foliage and branch cover after usually highly agile prey. These lizards are also very willing to swim, sometimes traveling up to 40 miles over water. A unique adaptation in their scales allows them to flush their face with red pigment if they feel threatened, which appears even more vibrant to other reptiles in their environment.

They are known to take down prey up to three times their weight, using serrated teeth and blinding bursts of speed to wear down larger targets. For smaller prey, the Mokobo are known to be messy eaters. Powerful neck muscles turn their serrated teeth from knives to chainsaws, tearing prey open or even in half when the lizards violently shake whatever they can fit in their jaws.

Surisen, or “Sun snakes” are massive aquatic snakes that inhabit the waterways and shallow pools of the mangroves. These 230 kilogram ambush predators primarily specialize on turtles, and have several adaptations to help them break down such hard to swallow prey. Like the Mokobo, highly serrated teeth allow the Surisen to slice away chunks from any turtle unlucky enough to be caught in their coils.

Though they live almost their entire lives in the water, these snakes do need to come to shore to nest. Being sluggish and slow moving on land, they and their young often fall prey to Mokobo lizards looking for an easy meal. Alternatively, Surisen snakes are very willing to take Mokobo lizards who are crossing waterways. Surisen are surprisingly social for snakes, sometimes taking shifts guarding nesting spots to allow each mother to hunt for a few hours each day.

The mangroves cover a wide swath of the southernmost coast, proving to be a highly diverse ecosystem with a lack of draconic predators present.

Red Wyverns are the oldest breed of domestic dragon in existence, and closest resemble the wild ancestors of all domestic dragons. These dragons are firespitters, and untrained individuals are known to liberally coat what they consider their territory in scorch marks.
