Not a WIP (this is from Resignation: Sidetracked Part 4), but I couldn’t find any instances of “dent” in Something Familiar or To Break A Curse. #WIPSnips

With a heavy sigh, I continue the search for something worth my time. I take the first step. And my foot lands on something small and solid. A tiny crunch beneath my shoe's thin sole.

I step back and look down.

A pen.

It's just a pen. A cheap, grey BIC pen with no cap and tiny dents on the end from being chewed on. I've seen a few of these pens this summer. James uses them when he writes in his notebook—to keep notes and lists or whatever.

I kneel down.

But, as I reach for the pen, my head fills with static. Intense panic seizes my chest. Why? It's a pen. Frustrated, I power through the discomfort. My fingertips brush the plastic, and my dreamscape shatters.

Still, I can't help wondering. How long did it take him to recover from his injuries? They were as severe as the last injuries I endured, if not worse, but he was apparently conscious the next day and stable enough to be transferred to another hospital the day after that.

The only lasting effects I deal with, besides the scars, are a bit of tightness in my right side when I bend or twist a certain way and random bouts of discomfort in my right hand. Knowing Ice, it's totally possible he has no scars to show for it, let alone lingering aches and pains.

"You good?" I asked.

She nodded, but I was still worried, so I opened my phone's camera and switched it to selfie mode. I just wanted to show Em how her hair turned out, but my camera lost it the second she entered the frame, going fuzzy and distorted, a lot of black and white but no fine detail. It caught us both off guard, then Em sighed.

"Yeah, I kinda figured I messed cameras
up somehow," she said tiredly.

I took a picture of her just to see, and it ended up looking like one of those low quality nighttime images on r/Paranormal. I could see the wood wall on the edges of the photo, but the space where Em sat was a weird, dark void with white specs in the general location of her eyes and mouth. Her hoodie was fairly clear in the frame, though.

horribly. So I gave up trying to hide something so stupid.

"Tamber tried asking me to go to homecoming with her," I said. "Like...she waited for me outside of the student council room, holding a cringey sign and everything. In front of everyone in the student council. It was...humiliating, and I...wasn't very nice about it. I made fun of her. Humiliated her back. Hurt her feelings or whatever."

His frown grows more uneasy, and he leans forward again. "Ice Monroe has money and extensive family and business connections. By all appearances, he was a model citizen—rather young, yes, but a prime candidate for the sponsorship program—so your case was considered low-risk, high-reward. In short, he avoided the usual consultation with Human Advocacy by working with upper admin and the Morphology Research Division instead. I did not speak with Ice until after your application had already been approved. Your file was prepped and on my desk before I ever met him in person."

"How is that allowed? Just because he has money?"

"Money is power, Miss Palmer," he says mildly.

I'm going to win.

James comes up closer behind me. Around me, to the left. I feel his feline shoulder brush the fur over my hip, so I jump, hoping to cross the finish line before he overtakes me, but something snags me as I land. Snags the cord around my neck. I try to stop, but my paws slip in the loose sand, and the necklace clips my ear as it comes off.

I tumble the rest of the way down the hill in human form.

"Jayde!"

I land on my back, heart pounding against my ribs as I stare up at the clouds. James stumbles into view and drops to his knees beside me, flinging sand into the air. His hands are on me before I have a chance to look at him properly.

"Are you okay?" he asks breathlessly. "Are you hurt?"

When I open my eyes, I realize he's afraid.

I haven't seen that look on his face in a long time. For some reason, it makes me laugh. I roll toward him, curling into myself with my hands on his knee, laughing so hard my stomach hurts.

I followed a familiar game trail deeper into the forest toward a GPS marker l’d stuck on the creek several weeks back, using my phone’s flashlight to guide the way. The further I went, the weirder I felt, and I wasn’t used to feeling weird in the woods. #WIPSnips from To Break A Curse

I dressed in my warmest clothes, grabbed a pocket knife from the kitchen junk drawer, and headed out into the night. There had been a few rainy days in the past week, so l was curious if Whipple Creek had any water in it yet.

I followed a familiar game trail deeper

Long, deep gouges in the bark of a tree at chest level. They looked recent, but I couldn't figure out what could have caused them. I'd seen black bear scratches on trees before—it wasn't unheard of to see bears in the woods around Raven Point—but the gashes in the tree were nothing like bear markings. They didn't resemble ax or machete cuts either.

I will never understand the lack of care that convinces someone who already spent months or years writing a book (and wants to self-publish but can’t afford to outsource help) that it’s not worth also learning how to do the other things like cover layout and graphic design themselves.

She carefully unhooked my horns from my hood, undid the old messy bun, and saturated my hair with detangling spray. It took several minutes for her to brush it all out, then, to my surprise, she began to braid it.

"To be honest," Rachel said, "I had no idea how to braid hair yesterday. I had to watch a few tutorials on YouTube. But I figured you might want a nicer hairstyle before you turn back."

"Thanks," I said. It was quiet for a couple minutes, then I sighed. "Rachel, um— I really owe you one. I feel like...you're probably the only person in the entire world who would ve been willing to give me a chance looking like this."

She kind of laughed. "You really think so?"

"Maybe. I'm lucky the person unlucky enough to stumble across me in the middle of the night was the weird creepypasta-obsessed girl. Anyone else would have turned me in to the cops."

Ice is written to be punchable. I love him as a character, but I want readers to either dislike him greatly or feel bad for liking him at all. But, tbh, most of my characters (MCs or otherwise, if they provide any real level of conflict) have moments that make me want to smack them.
