Musée des Plans-Reliefs was as good as I expected. Also fairly astonishing display of early alpine cartography around the French-Savoie border. #OldMaps
A 1:600 scale 3-D model of Mont St Michel in the Musée des Plans-Reliefs, Les Invalides. The view captured shows the island from the South. The gothic choir of the monastic church is particularly apparent at top right of the model.

The model was made by a monk towards the end of the 18th century. It was donated to the king 10 years later, and became part of the Plans-Reliefs collection.A detail from the Plan-Reliwf 3-D model of Toulon. The model shows Toulon immediately after the successful siege where Napoleon's artillery played an important role. The model was made on Napoleon's orders a few years later.

The detail shows part of the inner harbour, with a row of warehouses behind. Part of the town's fortifications can be seen behind. The area around Grenoble, France on an early military map. The map was concerned with the border territory between France and Savoy. Territory to the West of the Rivers Drac and, after their confluence, Isère is not mapped.

The map is monochrome with hills and mountains shown with hachuring. An 18th century map showing the Vauban era fortifications of Briançon in the French Alps. The map is coloured and hills denoted with hachuring.

Briançon lies at the foot of the strategic alpine pass of Montgenevre, and close to the, then disputed, border with Savoy.

Turns out the original obituary was rather light on fact checking!
Corrections to The Guardian's obituary of Sir Tom Stoppard as of 16th December 2025:

"This article was amended on 1, 2 and 15 December 2025. An earlier version said Stoppard’s four grandparents and various other relatives died in the death camp at Terezín. These relatives were transported to Terezín, which was a transit camp and ghetto rather than a death camp, but none died there: his paternal grandparents died at the Riga ghetto in Latvia and his maternal grandparents at Auschwitz. Also, Stoppard’s play The Hard Problem was first produced in 2015, not 2006; and Travesties was set in Zurich, not Trieste."
