Too L.A.
A generous selection of letters, sent and unsent, by the one and only Eve Babitz, queen of the witty, gossipy, and thoroughly engrossing missive.

about 16.6% of registered Democrats voted in Tuesday's primaries in NYC. (wondering if that figure is accurate—but it's the only one I can find)

Deleted earlier response because I misread it. Yes, I’ve listened on and off and know people (from conservative backgrounds who are not at all educated on I/P) who listen and will take this as truth. Dispiriting.

I worked in a candy store in CT in the 90s and we sold penuche fudge. Hardly anyone who walked into the store was familiar with the term and I nearly always had to explain what it was. The store was Hilliard’s and there is still at least one branch extant.

Murmur, the band’s debut studio album, was released 43 years ago on April 12, 1983. Produced by Mitch Easter & Don Dixon, Murmur remains, according to music journalist Tim Peacock, “one of the most compelling and otherworldly debut albums in rock history.” Share your Murmur memories in the comments.

Evictions are up (over 60% in March), and the only reason the eviction rate wasn’t even higher was because of massive mutual aid efforts across the city. We still have a gap of $13,000. Please share our gofundme widely and please donate again, if you can. 💵 🌼 🥰 🏠 www.gofundme.com/f/support-mi...

For February I'm reading Moderan, a collection of short stories by David R. Bunch. I have never seen such an absurdist take on the dystopian genre. Usually there is some amount of giving the devil his due, the power and technological force of the oppressors are depicted as serious and foreboding.

Meanwhile this is what non-Jews will be learning, courtesy, in this case, of the Know Your Enemy podcast. Alternate history really. And one that recasts historical arguments in terms of present day ones. The Good Jew/Bad Jew dichotomy immutable, historical. So dispiriting.

weird that the first time I came across this belief was in 2023 from a Jewish leftist (and I was well into my 40s). I thought I must have misread his comment that Jews “are not a nation.” Had to reread it several times before it sunk in.

This discourse is driving me up a wall. And well-meaning types are picking up on this story, which is the sort of thing being amplified by nefarious actors, without interrogating it. And of course they are mostly unaware that shrapnel did land in this very area not long ago.
