Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse: archive.org/details/tipp...

A casual Star Wars alien fella at the cantina, in a sun faded, reddish photo. Someone will be mad at me for not knowing who this is.

Phil, a balding Caucasian man, poses a model of the garthok, an antagonist from the Coneheads movie.

Phil, a balding caucasian man, points at some CG on a CRT computer monitor, as a younger man looks on. The screen shows a model of a dinosaur attacking a jeep, while there's an actual physical model of that event in the foreground for reference.

an isolated shot of a star wars vehicle. Sorry, I don't know star wars lol

like it's crazy looking back because i made it even way bigger after that

A screenshot of my player character in Final Fantasy 14, Garo. She is sitting on the railing of the bridge in Kugane, wearing a red and black jacket and boots, staring into the water. Her enormous tail is curled around her, about as thick as her torso and longer, tall enough to that it extends from her rear, above her butt, curls around to come forward and have its tip past her knees. It is covered in dark blue scales, and has a light brown cloth wrapped partially around it.

For those who haven't been keeping track, I just uploaded the last chapter of my entries for ffxivwrite this year! That was a lot of fun! Writing regularly is good for you, I think, and I'm proud of a lot of this. To celebrate, here's a picture of Garo's big fat tail. No touching.

A picture of my character in Final Fantasy 14, Garo. She is standing in front of her house in the Limsa Lominsa housing district, wearing a long white coat, white boots, and black pants. She has one hand on her hips, with the other planting a spear on the ground, and has her back facing the camera, looking at the viewer over her shoulder. There is a summoning bell next to her, and notably, her enormous tail is plainly visible, coming out of her rear. It is covered in large, dark-blue scales, and seems to have a length of gray cloth wrapped around it. It's long enough to reach the ground from her waist, and is about as thick as her waist, although it tapers off to be thinner towards the end.

inject this into my veins this is a man whos been mad about modern isekai and its departure from shoujo for the past 30yrs. i genuinely hope the reboot of mkr gives us the return to shoujo isekai

While “isekai” stories have become increasingly popular in the last decade, even in the '90s, there were many stories where female protagonists get transported to a magical world. What do you think makes Magic Knight Rayearth different from modern isekai? What makes these female-led stories interesting for modern audiences?

MIURA: The biggest difference is that Magic Knight Rayearth is a story about growth and the sacrifices that come with it, rather than one about cheat abilities.

In many modern isekai series, protagonists either begin with—or quickly obtain— cheat abilities that allow them to effortlessly overwhelm their opponents. Much of the appeal lies in the wish-fulfillment of watching an unstoppable hero dominate every battle.

By contrast, Hikaru, Umi, and Fū are simply three ordinary junior high school girls who are suddenly summoned to the isekai (fantasy) world of Cefiro. They take up swords, suffer injuries, shed tears, and gradually awaken both their magical powers and inner strength as they overcome their fears and insecurities. This journey of personal growth is one of the defining charms of 1990s isekai fantasy.
Even today, many stories aimed at female audiences center on romance. In the first arc of Magic Knight Rayearth, however, what drives Hikaru, Umi, and Fū is not romantic feelings for boys, but the powerful bond they share and their promise to make it back to Tokyo together. Their genuine sisterhood—built on mutual respect and supporting one another through their weaknesses—is something I believe modern audiences who appreciate independent relationships can deeply relate to.
In the latter half of the story, they don't simply carry out the mission they've been given. They begin questioning what principles should govern this world and ultimately make the choice that will determine its fate. Rather than waiting for someone else to save them, they take control of their own destiny.... alt continued

haro saying fuck used as overflow alt text for previous continues below

I believe this image of strong women choosing their own path embodies exactly the kind of empowerment that resonates with today's anime fans

if you put a gun to my head, i would say with like 70% certainty i'd still enjoy katawa shoujo and that it's still much better than its history and concept would suggest. but also no i'm not going out of my way to replay it to check because there's like a 30% chance i'm wrong and that's scary.

objectively i have to put final fantasy xiv on here. i've been in a static continuously for years at this point and the game is a huge part of my current social life. i've reconnected with old friends and met new ones through it. i also wouldn't be as much of a freak about tails without it probably.

in 2015 i was very depressed and had a lot of growing to do as a person and undertale helped me through both of those things. at a time where i didn't know what my goals were, it also reinvigorated my love of character writing and storytelling. also it taught me what nonbinary people were lol

My echo flower submission for the undertale 20th anniversary. My image is napstabook colored in the nonbinary flag, with a blue background because the image looked kind of weird with the black background and the changed coloring.

"I honestly think playing Undertale in 2015 made me a more empathetic person. It made me think a lot about how games are made, how games are played, and about love. Also sans funny"

shadow of the colossus is the first game i can think of that really blew my mind in terms of storytelling format. it really pushed me to think about the way stories are told and the relationship between consumer and narrative, which i think is important for any artist.

i was completely nonsocial in middle school and a lot of high school, and playing katawa shoujo was a very stark reminder for that me that empathy like... existed. it pushed me to realize that other people are people, which would still take me a while to fully comprehend. also image.

A message from me on discord that says:
"if you put a gun to my head i think i have to put katawa shoujo onto my fucking 9 games that shaped me list and at that point I think I might prefer if you pulled the trigger instead of me admitting that online"

my writing is so dialogue focused solely because i played the ace attorney trilogy as a kid. to this day, i still feel like i'm trying to emulate the snappy writing and wit in these games. distinct memory of beating trials and tribulations and crying my eyes out on my twin bed as a kid.

if i had to point to where my love of storytelling and fantasy worlds began, it would probably be replaying lyn's route in fire emblem 7 repeatedly as a child because i sucked at games and never got far with eliwood. i think the incredible sprite art also permanently shaped my brain aesthetically.
