Geologist & astronaut Dr. Kathryn Sullivan: the "most vertical human" in history. + From space: 1st American woman to walk in space, 11 Oct 1984 + To the deepest point of Earth's seabed: 1st woman to dive to the Challenger Deep (🔽 35,853 ft), 7 June 2020 She was born #OTD in 1951. #WomenInSTEM
An official NASA studio portrait of Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan (born 1951) during her early career as a space shuttle astronaut. Taken ahead of her groundbreaking October 1984 mission where she became the first American woman to perform a spacewalk, this image carries deep historical significance for women in STEM fields. The composition is a classic, vertically oriented portrait focusing on Sullivan from the waist up. She stands positioned at a three-quarter angle while turning her face back toward the viewer. Sullivan looks just to the right of the camera lens with a warm, confident smile and a gentle, approachable expression. Her brown hair is styled in a voluminous, feathered 1980s shoulder-length cut with soft curls framing her forehead. She wears a professional navy blue short-sleeved polo shirt featuring a prominent, authentic red and white NASA "worm" logo patch on the left breast pocket. In the background on her right stands a large, vibrant United States flag with its stars and stripes prominently displayed. To her left, softly out of focus on a table, sits a scale desktop model of a NASA Space Shuttle attached to its external fuel tank and solid rocket boosters. The mood is formal, patriotic, and inspiring.A candid photograph of pioneering American astronaut and oceanographer Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan (born 1951) celebrating her historic June 2020 return from the Challenger Deep—the deepest known point in Earth’s oceans. This moment solidified her legacy as the first person to both walk in space and reach the ocean floor. The outdoor shot frames Sullivan off-center against a deep blue, slightly undulating ocean that stretches out to a hazy, light-clouded horizon line under bright sunlight. Sullivan stands leaning slightly out from a white oceanic vessel hatch or submersible entry point. She smiles broadly with triumphant energy, looking off-camera to the left. Her left arm is fully extended outward, flashing an enthusiastic thumbs-up sign. On the far left edge of the frame, another crew member's hand wearing a black textured glove mirrors her thumbs-up gesture. She wears a cobalt blue utility flight suit featuring a golden rectangular patch over her right chest. Her light brown hair is short and windblown, and she wears rectangular tortoiseshell sunglasses. Thick, bright yellow heavy-duty rigging straps slice vertically through the left foreground, framing her body, while a curved metallic silver handrail sits to her left. The overall mood is joyful, victorious, and adventurous.

Ana Roqué de Duprey was a Puerto Rican educational trailblazer. At just 13, she opened a school in her home & wrote a #geography textbook later adopted across PR. She went on to found multiple girls' schools & co-found the U. of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. She died #OTD in 1933.🧵 #education #HigherEd
An oil painting captures Ana Roqué de Duprey (1853–1933), the historic Puerto Rican educational reformer, pioneering botanist, astronomer, and foundational suffragist. Shown in her later years, she is positioned facing slightly to the right of the frame, looking directly out with a warm, gentle smile and wise, soft eyes. Her silver-gray hair is split with a neat center part and pulled back cleanly into a bun. She wears a formal, dark navy or black Victorian-era gown featuring a prominent white scalloped collar that rests flat across her shoulders, accented by a large, matching dark bow securely tied at the center of her neck. The setting is a minimalist, plain dark brown backdrop that draws full focus to her visage. The composition mimics a traditional nineteenth-century studio portrait, conveying a dignified, revered, and deeply intellectual mood that underscores her immense historical significance as an island-wide icon of empowerment.

German chemist Dr. Ida Noddack co-discovered Rhenium (element 75) in 1925. She died #OTD in 1978. She was the first to propose the concept of nuclear fission (1934). Her theory was met with fierce skepticism and outright dismissed by contemporary physics giants. But 4 years later...🧵 #WomenInSTEM
A close-up, black-and-white portrait of Dr. Ida Noddack (1896–1978), the pioneering German chemist and physicist who co-discovered the chemical element rhenium and was the first to propose the concept of nuclear fission in 1934. Dr. Noddack is positioned at a slight three-quarter angle while turning her face toward the camera, establishing a direct connection with the viewer. Her light-colored hair is styled neatly, swept up and away from her face in a soft, textured wave arrangement typical of the mid-20th century. Her expression is composed and contemplative, marked by a subtle, knowing half-smile that conveys an aura of quiet confidence, intelligence, and academic resolve. She wears a simple, dark-toned V-neck blouse or jacket, drawing focus directly to her facial features. The portrait is set against a completely dark, minimalist background devoid of any objects or setting context, creating a formal studio aesthetic. The lighting is soft yet deliberate, illuminating the left side of her face to emphasize her expression while casting gentle shadows across her right cheek. The composition relies on high-contrast monochromatic tones and a grainy, vintage texture characteristic of early photographic film, reinforcing its archival and historic nature. The overall mood is dignified and deeply intellectual, honoring her enduring legacy as a foundational pioneer of nuclear and atomic science.

NASA mathematician, programmer & manager Dorothy Vaughan became the first Black female supervisor at NACA (precursor to NASA) in 1949. Her life & work, along with those of Katherine Johnson & Mary Jackson inspired the book/film Hidden Figures. She was born #OTD in 1910. #WomenInSTEM
This side-by-side composite image contrasts the real historical figure Dorothy Vaughan with the actress who portrayed her in the 2016 film Hidden Figures, celebrating her legacy as a pioneering NASA mathematician and its first Black female supervisor (1910–2008). On the left, a vintage, black-and-white portrait shows a young Dorothy Vaughan looking directly at the camera with a calm, serene, and dignified expression. She has dark hair pulled neatly back, wide eyes, and a slight, subtle smile. She wears a dark jacket or blouse. The background is completely plain and light, focusing all attention on her composed demeanor. On the right, a vibrant, color photograph of actress Octavia Spencer as Vaughan. She is positioned in a right-facing profile, turning her head back slightly to look toward the viewer with a knowing, confident, and warm expression. She has voluminous, shoulder-length dark hair and is wearing a textured gray blazer. The background is a softly blurred room filled with retro computing technology, including large reel-to-reel tape drives with prominent blue spools, symbolizing the transition to electronic data processing. The overall composition bridges history and modern media, creating an inspiring and respectful mood that honors Vaughan's immense historical significance in aerospace engineering and computer programming.

Her name faded from popular public history even though she was a household name in Black America for 40 years. I just bought her biography, "She Can Bring Us Home: Dr. Dorothy Boulding Ferebee, Civil Rights Pioneer" written by historian and judge Diane Kiesel. Can't wait to lean more about her.
The cover of the biography of Dr. Dorothy Boulding Ferebee (1898–1980), a historic Black physician, public health administrator, and civil rights leader who served as the Medical Director of the Mississippi Health Project. The composition features a clean, two-toned design split vertically. The left side is a light beige background containing the text, while the right side features a striking black-and-white photograph of Dr. Ferebee. She is captured looking directly at the camera with a calm, dignified, and serious expression. She wears an elegant, long-sleeved dark dress or suit with structured shoulders and a high neckline. A distinctive, ornate silver brooch or buckle accentuates her waistline, and she wears a classic wristwatch on her left wrist. Her dark hair is styled in a neat, smooth vintage updo typical of the mid-20th century. The text on the left is cleanly arranged in a dark brown serif font: the main title at the top reads "She Can Bring Us Home" in a larger, muted gold color, followed by the subtitle "Dr. Dorothy Boulding Ferebee, Civil Rights Pioneer." The author's name, "DIANE KIESEL," is printed below in crisp white block letters. At the bottom left, a brief promotional review quote reads, "'A monumental work.' —Virginia Magazine." The overall mood of the cover is professional, historic, and deeply reverent, honoring her profound legacy.

Top 10 richest women in Africa in 2026 and their Nationalities
Africa has produced many highly successful female entrepreneurs and investors in industries ranging from oil and healthcare to manufacturing, cocoa processing, finance, telecommunications, and real estate. However, ranking Africa’s wealthiest women accurately is more difficult than ranking its billionaires. There is an important reason for this. Forbes’ official 2026 Africa Billionaires list contains no women. Forbes counted 23 African billionaires in 2026, but all of them were men. (Forbes) That means claims circulating online that several African women are currently worth $1 billion or more should be treated carefully unless the figure can be supported by recent financial disclosures or a reputable wealth tracker.
