Just a wee reminder that our new workshop series kicks off this Tuesday with a timely keynote about books as resistance in the context of #Jacobite Scotland by Dr Kelsey Jackson Williams. Looking so forward to catching up with this fantastic community!

As much as I HATEHATEHATE to admit it, after trying for years to use snazzy Markdown editors to write academic pieces, I always end up giving up and copy-pasting to a Word Doc. It’s like I need the illusion of it being in print to actually get into it.

Can any1 recall a piece that A MacInnes wrote, wherein he describes the SSPCK as (paraphr) the “KGB of the early modern Gàidhealtachd”? I’m not sure if it’s in an obscure pub, a false memory, or I heard it said out loud but never seen it in print @weegiegraeme.bsky.social @funkyplaid.bsky.social ???

Feb 1747: London correspondent (and Aberdonian) Adam Anderson advises SSPCK *not* to publish the computation of the number of Scottish Catholics (c.18,000) found in the seized manuscripts. SSPCK concur and agree to publish simply that there are “in general a great number"

Nov 1746: SSPCK recorded that Argyllshire militia had seized papers penned by Highland Catholics. One complained of the impact of SSPCK schools on the Catholic Mission. Obviously a PR boon for the SSPCK and appears in their 1748 pamphlet. Does anyone know if this letter is stored/printed anywhere?

3 May 1744. Not too long before the MacDonalds of Glencoe would come out for the Jacobite cause, Chief Alexander MacDonald petitions the SSPCK for a school in Appin, promising accomodation for school and schoolmaster. His request was granted.

Any 18thC historians out there have any info on Albert Munro of Coull? He was a director of the SSPCK 1733–1766. A Kirk elder in Dingwall, I think. Obviously gentry, but quite probably a lawyer as well. Ever come across him @funkyplaid.bsky.social ?

Any other #historian have a delightful little book (Scots: wee bookie) they always find themselves coming back to? This is mine - a timeless book by the late-great Donald Withrington. An under-appreciated academic giant, without whose shoulder I would have been able to write most of my work.

Tonight's pile of books. Yes, still Drag Race on in the background. Thinking about whether Edinburgh-based intervention in Highland schooling actually contributed to the ill-feeling that gave rise to the 1745 Jacobite rising – expectations raised then quashed?
