If you’ve ever enjoyed a sports simulation games, this may be your last chance to pick up SMB4 for cheap. It’s excellent. The first 3 were indie games, and EA gave Metalhead Studios the budget they never had to make 4 shine. But the franchise is dead now that EA is sold and in debt.

@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt Fire Emblem: Road to Ruin (GBA, 2014) is a FE7 hack created by Primefusion. The characters and weapons were cool and maps were interesting. But the first 10 chapters were too hard, and I didn’t want to rely on save states as much as I did. Took ~40hrs. 7/10

It’s wild to ask $60 for these “upgrades.” You do not need an improved frame rate or improved visuals on a pixelated turn-based RPG. Even if you had both versions, I don’t think you’d even notice a difference if played the SW1 version on a Switch 2.

For example, it sadly locks the higher difficulties behind the easy ones. But the tennis itself is great! 7/10

@polykillpodcast.bsky.social Luminous Arc (Nintendo DS, 2007) is a fun Tactical RPG that does some cool things and has an interesting story, though one of the voice actors should be in jail for his crimes. Nikolai almost made me throw this cartridge into the garbage, but I’m glad I #JustBeatIt! 4/5

I’ve been on an island for about a week, and I’ve been putting some major time into Luminous Arc (2007) on my Nintendo DS XL. There’s something really great about the DS and its library that’s unlike anything you can play on today’s modern consoles.

CrossCode might be my favorite indie game, but it has a rough, confusing intro before it sings. The combat, puzzles, and story are great, but the accessible difficulty options are a real star, allowing you adjust both combat damage and puzzle timing by 10% increments. 90% was just right for me!

Unfortunately, its difficulty makes it inaccessible to all but the true sickos, but it has fun turn-based mechanics like moving fighters around two battle lanes. Easy mode please! 4/5

The characters’ actions go off when their countdown timer at the bottom of their card reaches zero. The player can play one card from their hand per turn, which can be used to buff your heroes, attack your enemies, or summon new heroes.

For 20 of my 50 coins, I could buy an enhancement to one of my weapons that would increase to cooldown by 1, but would add Perfect Strike, where the attack’s cooldown would instantly recharge if it was used to remove the exact amount of HP the enemy had remaining. The shop also offers other items, enhancements, and permanent upgrades that can be purchased for various currencies.

It’s a miracle this game came out after a 12-year development hell, and it deserves respect for what it accomplishes. 4/5

@polykillpodcast.bsky.social #JustBeatIt Westerado: Double Barreled is a great introduction to sandbox RPGs like Fallout or Skyrim where you have the freedom to do or kill whatever you want but without the 60-hr time commitment. The genre isn’t for me, but it’s a neat little spaghetti western! 7/10

I could spend a whole @indiequestpod.com episode explaining all the aspects that make it so good, but it’s a triumph. 💎 5/5
