Authoritarian regimes benefit from people who are not smart enough to get promoted in traditional ladders but ambitious enough to commit crimes in their efforts to get ahead. Regimes give them a path. As we reduce education, as we reduce real opportunities, we are creating perfect conditions.

Maybe I shouldn't have scheduled my students to read SCHOOL FOR GOOD MOTHERS directly after the beautifully meditative PIRANESI. "This book is ragebait!" one student declared of SCHOOL. I don't disagree.

I've been teaching Susanna Clarke's PIRANESI this week and my God, what a lovely, lovely book. As the world gets progressively madder and more anxious, it's been a pleasure to return to its peaceful halls. If you haven't read this splendid fantasy novel yet, do yourself a favor and pick it up.

I picked up this collection after reading Thomas Ha’s wonderful “window boy” last year. I’m only partway through reading the collection but can confirm that the first three stories are bangers. Ha has a knack for weird, surreal, and psychologically complex storytelling.

My post #WorldCon plane book was Anne de Marcken’s It Lasts Forever and Then It’s Over- a literary zombie novel using undead bodies as a metaphor for grief. It's short, spare, & poetic, with allusions to Judith Butler & Djuna Barnes. Liked it. Not sure I got everything it was doing on this read.

A screenshot from Tumblr user omnybus, saying, I think what I love most about mythology is that the "Trickster God/Spirit" is an archetypical character found in almost every body of folklore. It's like "Oh, here's our God of the Sun, our God of the Sea, our God of Fertility, and our God of Being A Wretched Little Gremlin Who Causes Problems On Purpose".
