After a long day at the aquarium, the otters help tidy their toys away. Payment is made promptly and entirely in ice cubes.

NHC calls it a hurricane, and that seems correct to me.

Cat 5 Hurricane Polo, seen 22nd Sept by the OLCI instrument aboard Sentinel-3B. Polo rapidly intensified and now has ferocious winds OLCI is designed to look at the Earth's oceans, seas and lakes - but thanks to a great design is also super useful for monitoring weather too @esa.int @eumetsat.int

Late on Monday night, @esa.int successfully launched FLEX and Sentinel-3C aboard an Avio VEGA-C rocket. Two really exciting missions, am super happy to see them in orbit and am looking forward to working with Sentinel-3C as we get it ready for operations. 😃

In six days, we will launch the FLEX and Sentinel-3C satellites! S3C will ensure we can provide high quality climate data and information to support distaster response into the next decade. Can't wait to see these two beautiful satellites in space 🚀 @esaearth.esa.int @eumetsat.int @ec.europa.eu

Drought conditions across Western Europe - the effects of our hot, dry, summer so far These two pics were taken by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission ~7 weeks apart. The effects of limited rainfall and hot, clear, weather are clearly visible: Much of Western Europe is looking desert-like from space.

Sentinel-2 and wildfires: These last few days, a devastating wildfire has been raging near Los Gallardos in Spain - sadly resulting in multiple deaths and significant destruction. This pic was taken on 10th July by Sentinel-2A, the scale of the fire clearly visible.

England now have their traditional questionable refereeing decision onto which they can put the entire blame for their poor performance 😂

Today in AI is rubbish...it decided I should have "clever" code rather than "valid" code. And we're gonna roll this stuff out to help teach schoolkids, eh?

Breathtaking! As a child I wanted to travel to the Moon...as an adult, my height worked against me and my travel plans - but I was hooked on space anyway! Delighted to see a joint American + European success on Artemis II! @esa.int supplying the service module. 💪🛰️

Dual use: If we like it or not, all civilian sats have defence-related uses. This video shows the Russian Arctic Metagaz LNG carrier exploding after reportedly being hit by Ukranian drones. It comes from @eumetsat.int's Meteosat-12, a weather satellite. Weather is civil, but we see so much more.

Earlier in Feb, Cyclone Gezani hit Mozambique, sadly resulting in fatalities anddamage to buildings Here, two Sentinel-2 pics show the impacts: Flooding inland, and a hugerunoff heading into the ocean. S2 is critical for disaster response - and we plan to improve its value for the next gen mission!

Fifty two thousand six hundred orbits around our wonderful little planet! Congrats Sentinel-3A! Later this year, younger brother S3C will be launched - ready to take over the operational optical imaging duties so that S3A can enjoy a well-deserved retirement 😀

We have some technical limits on this (thermal and electrical) so it's not possible to do systematic night acquisitions with the current generation unfortunately. For next gen, I aim to have some night capabilities - but not as frequent / comprehensive as the daytime imaging.

In December, we ran a campaign to switch the Sentinel-2A satellite on at night over some specific areas. The goal was to provide data to help me work out how useful night imaging capabilities would be for next gen Sentinel-2...and the results are wonderful! Read more: www.esa.int/Applications...

Kinda shocked at how the Netherlands copes with a little bit of snow. Every train cancelled, roads not clear, people "stocking up on supplies in case shops close". But, tbh, im glad to know its not just the UK that cant handle winter weather. I thought blighty was the exception 😂

Interesting, thanks. My municipality (Voorschoten) obviously sucks when it comes to snow machines 😂

Yes, exactly- this is my point. Cars prioritised and inadequate services for bikes and public transport. Is disappointing compared to other similar countries.

Simon Proud @simonsat.bsky.social · 05/01/2026
I must say I was disappointed! Expected the Dutch authorities to clear the cycle lanes, but they only cleared / gritted the car lanes - cycle lanes filled with slushy snow and ice.

Yes indeed, which is why I'm confused! But it looks very much like an artefact related to the atmospheric correction and the scene geometry (most likely solar zenith angle). Maybe some numerical precision thing? Will be easier to tell when I see the data :)
100
Simon Proud @simonsat.bsky.social · 17/12/2025
@kosmi.bsky.social could you provide a link to the L2A scene on the brower, including whatever band division you did to highlight the artefacts? I will forward it to the data quality team and get their feedback.
110
Simon Proud @simonsat.bsky.social · 17/12/2025
I would say the opposite! :) My first guess would be that this is an artefact introduced by the atmospheric correction, most likely tie points in the lookup tables.

Huge dust storms in Pakistan, seen by the @esa.int / @ec.europa.eu Sentinel-2B and Sentinel-3B satellites on 4th November. Neither satellite was designed to monitor dust plumes, so it's impressive how much information they give us about the detail and extent of these storms!

Along the N. Coast of Alaska, winter is closing in. These pics ages, from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, were taken just two weeks apart. Heavy snowfall on land, and the beginnings of ice on sea. Soon, the sun will be too low and Sentinel-2 will stop acquiring images until Springtime.

Simon Proud @simonsat.bsky.social · 28/10/2025
Yeah, L1C also has the artifacts - caused by differing detector geometry. Only the L1b can fix it. very niche so doesn’t make too much difference though, just bugs the perfectionist in me! Really great that the imagery is on the browser so quickly. Will be super useful for the disaster response.

Simon Proud @simonsat.bsky.social · 28/10/2025
Looks good - but unfortunately the browser introduces some artefacts as it's using the L2 data.

Insane. This is Hurricane #Melissa seen right near landfall by the Copernicus / @esa.int Sentinel-2C satellite. It looks so beautiful, and it's hard to comprehend how much destruction a hurricane like this can cause. Best wishes to everyone in Jamaica.

17 hours of #Hurricane #Melissa seen from space compressed into 9 seconds. Weather sats are vital for monitoring and forecasting Hurricanes. Without them, our forecasts would be much worse - increasing the danger posed by these monsterous storms. Data: NOAA / GOES-19 Video: ESA / Simon Proud

Congrats to my friends + colleagues across @esa.int , @eumetsat.int and @ec.europa.eu. MetOp-SG is exciting, a big leap forward for weather prediction. I think the key thing will be watching how scientists combine data from the different instruments to understand our planet. Lots of potential 😀

I saw that a new version of chatGPT has been released - gave it a quick try to write some simple python code...same garbage as the previous version. Now it's telling me that GPT is right and the python docs are wrong. At least for me, the AI bubble has well and truly popped 😆
