Researchers from Stanford claim humans actually have two brains – which is cool because the same university can now ruin two brains for the price of one with all the GenAI shit they're forcing upon students and the academic community. 🙄

The GenAI & bots shitshow on Bluesky is in full swing. This is what Bluesky is currently showing as of August 13, 8:20 a.m. CET, when the polls have just opened. #Clacton #Farage
Screenshot of the Bluesky interface with a focus on the trending topics. The top topic is "Farage wins Clacton seat" (but polls have just opened and no results have been declared). When you click on this trend, the BlueSky interface's top heading starts with "Count Binface also stood" (the past tense is not a typo made by me).

(1/2) The web is now full of people who claim they can sniff out "AI" writing but then list issues that have been present in human writing for ages. In writers circles some now even say they're changing their style b/c they don't want to be accused of writing with "AI". This sh*t is exhaaausting!

Palantir put out a 22-point summary of their CEO's book The Technological Republic. It's pitched as a defence of the West, but if you read it through the VDA framework, verification, deliberation, accountability, what it's actually doing looks rather different. twitter-thread.com/t/2045574398...
Opening text of a thread by Palantir from X
Because we get asked a lot.

The Technological Republic, in brief.

1. Silicon Valley owes a moral debt to the country that made its rise possible. The engineering elite of Silicon Valley has an affirmative obligation to participate in the defense of the nation.

2. We must rebel against the tyranny of the apps. Is the iPhone our greatest creative if not crowning achievement as a civilization? The object has changed our lives, but it may also now be limiting and constraining our sense of the possible.

3. Free email is not enough. The decadence of a culture or civilization, and indeed its ruling class, will be forgiven only if that culture is capable of delivering economic growth and security for the public.

4. The limits of soft power, of soaring rhetoric alone, have been exposed. The ability of free and democratic societies to prevail requires something more than moral appeal. It requires hard power, and hard power in this century will be built on software.

A worker died at an Amazon warehouse in Oregon last week. For more than an hour, workers were instructed to continue working as the man lay dead. One worker wanted to help, but a manager told them to “Just turn around and not look. Let’s get back to work," according to @thewesternedge.bsky.social.

NEW: WebinarTV, a company that bills itself as “a search engine for the best webinars,” is secretly scanning the internet for Zoom meeting links, recording the calls, and turning them into AI-generated podcasts for profit. @emanuelmaiberg.bsky.social reports:

With Ring’s recent partnership with Flock, which will further facilitate the sharing of video footage with police, and its new Search Party feature, the message is clear: Ring always will be in the business of leveraging its network of luxury surveillance consumers as a law enforcement tool.

FFS! It's not enough to exploit & displace vulnerable people via toxic, resource-hungry tech systems – now these systems even speak for those whose voices we actually need to hear?! And the clowns behind this justify it with FOMO and saying it's just like going on a date?! Wtf? #AI #EmpireOfAI #fail

I love being able to explain academic things like statistics, and the history of computer science, to journalists. In this article, I got to do both. 😍 Meanwhile @emilymbender.bsky.social does a brilliant job at explaining why it doesn’t make sense to have machines as the “translator” for human art.
