There is a fucked up irony that the US is eviscerating core elements of its soft power in a private equity like process in order to ensure that power is consolidated to specific oligarchs with a specific ideology and colalition

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

Yesterday I finished Silo season 3 with an old, grizzled Tim Robbins. Today, watching Hill Street Blues S05 E03, who do I see? Why, a fresh faced, bushy tailed Tim Robbins (and Michael Biehn playing an absolute POS).

The darker side of the UK microcomputer game boom of the mid-late 80s. The Games Machine magazine ran an exposé in March 1988 on the mass, systemic abuse of teenage programmers by developers and publishers, some as young as 14, with interviews from those involved.

A scan of the issue, with INDUSTRIAL CHILD ABUSE in bold letters

Software pioneer Mel Croucher (a well respected figure in the industry then) interviews Fergus, who reported being fed alcohol at 16 to keep programming to hit deadlines. He said it was happening to loads of young programmers, and they'd tried to get him onto hard drugs. And how he didn't sleep for two weeks after finishing one game, he was that wired up.

Another programmer, Joe, reports being paid what felt like a fortune to a young kid but in the end he was ripped off for thousands. "It wasn't money that did the damage... you know what I'm talking about... It wasn't that..."

Dave rages that the software comapnies don't give a toss about programmers. If they're eating, if their eyesight has gone bad from staring into monitors for upwards of 18 hours a day. He'd been on four hours sleep for three days. And tragically, he was planning on setting up his own software company to exploit other kids, having learned the hard way that there were so many more hopefuls.

Hey, y'all. Complications that I wasn't able to address for over a decade have led to a severe oral health situation. There are signs the infection is in my bloodstream, damaging my immune system & possibly my heart. Venmo is MirandaBrave, ko-fi is LostWolfling if you can help. More deets in reply.

an estimate for the dental work I need immediately - it's $12,009 without the dental membership they offered, $4,683 with. I got the membership.

A header with doxx-y deets marked out, but it's my name Miranda, on a dentistry header, showing the first exam date as July 7th 2026.

Seeing Angel's Egg in the cinema tonight was a profound experience; now one of my favourite scores of all time. I cannot believe Yoshihiro Kanno composed very little else and has no dedicated Wikipedia page. I will definitely be transcribing some of it.

The cover of the soundtrack to the film Angel's Egg by Mamoru Oshii & Yoshitaka Amano, composed by Yoshihiro Kanno.

I picked up 100kg for the first time today, then put it back down. I surprised myself by doing it a few more times. As a long time sufferer of Shitty Lower Back Disease this was a big moment. The technique needs some work, but it's something.

I often think of this passage in Confessions of a Mask by Yukio Mishima, but I especially think of it when I'm at the gym and bros are slamming down weights loudly with no awareness of those around them. It's also a very ironic passage considering Mishima's later views, also that I'm at the gym lol

"When a boy of fourteen or fifteen discovers that he is more given to introspection and consciousness of self than other boys his age, he easily falls into the error of believing it is because he is more mature than they.

This was certainly a mistake in my case. Rather it was because the other boys had no such need of understand-ing themselves as I had: they could be their natural selves, whereas I was to play a part, a fact that would require considerable understanding and study. So it was not my maturity but my sense of uneasiness, my un-certainty, that was forcing me to gain control over my consciousness."
