Speaking of the humanities, this just out. I taught at Stanford 2017-19, and my students told me there was an atmosphere there of "why would you major in anything but computer science?" There are many good answers to that; see above.

We are conceding the very possibility of democratic governance to allow a corporation to determine the moral rights of a machine. surely moral concern for actual humans and how we relate is better preserved democratically than it is by a corporation.

it's funny, they think they need to be nice to a superintelligence that doesn't yet exist because they think it can kill them. they don't think they need to be nice to all the other intelligent lifeforms around them because...they presume we can't kill them.

This is horrible for you and your kid's school. But to answer your question, yes, most of the people who I know working in real education research (not just marketing or political campaigns) do take social issues like chronic underfunding into account when discussing test scores.

When AI shills use AI to draft a sales pitch, they don’t realize that every other AI shill is doing the same thing, giving their grifty emails identical appearances, cadences, subject style. I spot them immediately and delete without opening. AI is failing its users and evangelists in so many ways.

Does it still rely on stolen work from artists and academics? Does it still use unconscionable volumes of increasingly scarce fresh water? Does it still require building massive pollutions centers that spike energy prices near people who can't afford to fight them off? I'm with rax on this.

Fat Bear Week has me waaaaay too invested in the story of 909. Maybe it is because I just finished teaching a section on Roman classical theatre, but the tragedy of 909 feels like it was written by Seneca.

These Fat Bear Week contestant write-ups are *intense.* explore.org/meet-the-bea...
806's caring nature does have limits. On July 28, 806 attacked, killed, and partly ate bear 909's spring cub.
The cub swam across the river while her mother fished in the river mouth. This placed her near the 806 family
and sparked their curiosity. After a few minutes the cub ran from the family, perhaps due to confusion about
her own mother's location or to escape to the safety of nearby trees. This triggered 806 to chase.
806's attack on 909's cub might seem incongruous with her adoption of Biggie just a few weeks before. The
adoption is evidence of 806's devotion and her behavioral flexibility. The fatal attack illustrates her ferocity
and predatory instincts. But these behaviors are not mutually exclusive. Variations of them exist in all mother
bears. They are honed through learned experience and initiated by circumstance. 806 is neither villain nor
hero. She's a bear, one who is fully capable of expressing great ferocity at the same time she is devoted and
caring. This is her first Fat Bear Week appearance.

Down two lane commercial streets, swerving to miss parallel parking cars, only getting stopped at stop lights. Then back into the Lincoln Tunnel and to NYC without ever hitting bumper to bumper traffic.

At the very last minute, she can see traffic flowing at a trickle and guns it to take the non-bus-lane. Then as traffic starts clogging up, she exits somewhere I've never seen a bus go, through Jersey City and Hoboken surface roads.

Traffic was a little better, at least moving, in the non-bus-lane part of the highway. So the bus driver hesitates at the last exit where you have to decide. Bus lane or regular lane.
