Lillian Smith (1897-
1966) bucked every stereotype of her time: as a white woman in the South during Jim Crow, she was a fearless advocate for desegregation and civil rights, and she was a lesbian who lived with the love of her life, literary critic
Paula Snelling.
Drawing upon unpublished archival material, Merritt provides the fullest portrait yet of Smith's inimitable and inspiring life, outlining her days running a progressive summer camp for girls, teaching music in China, publishing a literary journal for a decade, and writing her own books--both fiction and nonfiction--that called out "the sins of the white South, and of white America." Merritt provides the fullest portrait yet of Smith's inimitable and inspiring life, outlining her days running a progressive summer camp for girls, teaching music in China, publishing a literary journal for a decade, and writing her own books--both fiction and nonfiction--that called out "the sins of the white South, and of white America." Merritt engages both the public and private personas of Smith, while also providing impressively sharp analyses of her published books, such as Killers of the Dream and her controversial novel, Strange Fruit, to name just two. Merritt examines in detail Smith's reliance on psychology to explain why racism, a "psychosis," stunted her fellow Southerners' ability to experience empathy and creativity. Her reputation among Black civil rights leaders was impeccable, and the narrative folds in Smith's varied collaborations with the leading lights of the movement. Whereas previous scholarly biographies of Smith "are incomplete in significant ways," Merritt's An Inconvenient Woman delivers a first-rate and vigorous study that both illuminates and rouses. -Peggy Kurkowski, freelance book reviewer in Denver

Excited to read @kerileighmerritt.bsky.social biography of Lillian Smith, “An Inconvenient Woman: The Extraordinary Life of Lillian Smith, the Southerner Who Defied Jim Crow America.” Ready for people to learn about Lil’s life and importance.
Cover of Keri Leigh Merritt’s “An Inconvenient Woman” in a shelf with a first edition of Lillian Smith’s “Killers of the Dream.”Acknowledgements

This book would have been impossible to write without the labor, and often life's work, of so many others. An Inconvenient Woman is dedicated to the women who preserved Lillian's legacy. But I would be remiss not to acknowledge all the people who helped me accomplish the daunting task of trying to piece together a modern portrait of such an active, accomplished, complex human being. First and foremost, I am very grateful for my many conversations about Lillian with Dr. Matthew Teutsch, the director of the (now-defunct) Lillian
E. Smith Center during the years I was researching and writing this book. He was fundamental in helping me with difficult questions about both Lillian and Paula, reading the first draft of the manuscript and saving me from several mistakes. He reminded me about events in Lil's life that I had originally omitted from the manuscript. Teutsch also hosted several conferences on Lillian, introducing me to Reverend Benjamin Boswell, Dr. Jennifer Morrison, and Reverend Jarvis Curry, who added to my understanding of Lil's life and work. I also talked through a lot of my early ideas about Lillian and Paula with my dear friend and brilliant historian Karen Cox. We even spent a writing retreat weekend in Clayton on Old Screamer Mountain, staying in the cabins Lil once called home.
Many, many thanks go to Kristin Miller, who was a graduate student at the University of Florida when I began this project. Working as my research assistant, she scanned hundreds of pages from Lillian's biographical materials and correspondence in Gainesville. More re-cently, graduate student Ali Manning Plumides helped me finalize and standardize citations, and tracked down relevant photographs of Lillian, securing permissions for them. I am so grateful for their
