Excited to read @kerileighmerritt.bsky.social biography of Lillian Smith, “An Inconvenient Woman: The Extraordinary Life of Lillian Smith, the Southerner Who Defied Jim Crow America.” Ready for people to learn about Lil’s life and importance.
Cover of Keri Leigh Merritt’s “An Inconvenient Woman” in a shelf with a first edition of Lillian Smith’s “Killers of the Dream.”Acknowledgements

This book would have been impossible to write without the labor, and often life's work, of so many others. An Inconvenient Woman is dedicated to the women who preserved Lillian's legacy. But I would be remiss not to acknowledge all the people who helped me accomplish the daunting task of trying to piece together a modern portrait of such an active, accomplished, complex human being. First and foremost, I am very grateful for my many conversations about Lillian with Dr. Matthew Teutsch, the director of the (now-defunct) Lillian
E. Smith Center during the years I was researching and writing this book. He was fundamental in helping me with difficult questions about both Lillian and Paula, reading the first draft of the manuscript and saving me from several mistakes. He reminded me about events in Lil's life that I had originally omitted from the manuscript. Teutsch also hosted several conferences on Lillian, introducing me to Reverend Benjamin Boswell, Dr. Jennifer Morrison, and Reverend Jarvis Curry, who added to my understanding of Lil's life and work. I also talked through a lot of my early ideas about Lillian and Paula with my dear friend and brilliant historian Karen Cox. We even spent a writing retreat weekend in Clayton on Old Screamer Mountain, staying in the cabins Lil once called home.
Many, many thanks go to Kristin Miller, who was a graduate student at the University of Florida when I began this project. Working as my research assistant, she scanned hundreds of pages from Lillian's biographical materials and correspondence in Gainesville. More re-cently, graduate student Ali Manning Plumides helped me finalize and standardize citations, and tracked down relevant photographs of Lillian, securing permissions for them. I am so grateful for their

The outside of Les Deux Magots in March 2019. Photo by the author. I visited Paris for the first time back in the spring of 2019. During that trip, I only had, basically, a day and a half to wander around the city. I went to the Auguste Rodin museum, the Musée d’Orsay, and Cimetière du Montparnasse. As well, I walked to various sites where I knew that expatriate writers such as James Baldwin and Richard Wright gathered and wrote.

Upon Discovering the Work of Chaïm Soutine
Chaïm Soutine When we lived in Bergen, Norway, I would occasionally go to the KODE Art Museums to see pieces by Edvard Munch and other Norwegian artists. During one of those visits, I encountered the work of Nikolai Astrup, a modernist painter from Kalvåg. Walking through the galleries, I came upon his 1920 painting entitled Marsmorgen (March Morning). This work stopped me because it depicts a tree, with human-like characteristics, reaching its branches to the sky, as if stretching from a long winter slumber.

What Have I Been Reading in 2026?
It’s June, and that means that we are almost halfway through 2026. It also means that it’s time for me to share some of the books I’ve been reading this year. To this point, I have read about seventy five books. That puts me halfway to my goal of one hundred and fifty books for the year. As usual, I rotate my reading, moving from fiction to nonfiction to drama to graphic novels and comics.
