It seems a little odd to have my book "Arctic Journeys: A Journalist Across the Arctic World" called "hot and new," but I will take it. You can find a link to buy "Arctic Journeys" on Amazon...I invite you to join me in learning about the people & places I got to know as a journalist in the Arctic.

Thanks for this mention. It means a lot. When you put your heart and soul in writing a book, and especially one about the #Arctic, your life and that of others, you worry if anyone will understand what you want to say. I encourage everyone to read « Arctic Journey » which you can find on Amazon.

Maybe figs will replace maple trees in southern Quebec someday: my indoor fig tree (now outside enjoying the hot temperatures) already has 12 figs.

Gjoa Haven in western Nunavut recently experienced a long power outage in stormy, frigid temps and an ongoing water crisis and now this! I struggle with the high frequency of fires in Nunavut (often due to youth arson) where there are so many needs. This makes a hard place to live even harder.

While January 2026 was a cold one in most of Ontario and Southern Quebec, warmer temperatures dominated elsewhere. Baffin Island and Ellesmere Island had their warmest January on record, with up to 11.4° above normal for Iqaluit - improving last year's record by more than a degree!

Another water crisis is unfolding in Gjoa Haven, Nunavut where there’s been little water delivery for a while due to a water plant pipe issue and truck problems. People are melting ice or doing without. This is a community that already has a lot of food insecurity and is still dark most of the day.

You won't hear many fond remembrances of Bridget Bardot coming from the Arctic. Her activism caused hardship, poverty and death here. On top of that, she was super racist. I highly recommend watching the documentary Angry Inuk to learn more about that history.

Yet another water crisis in Nunavut but at least the feds stepped in quickly, unlike in the Nunavik community of Puvirnituq where Quebec waited weeks to step in. Living without clean water in frigid temperatures is terrible, but it’s something that southern Canadians don’t have to worry about.
