As someone not embedded in American culture, what was it like? I've only conceptualized the event as (when I was too young to really understand) some crazy thing that happened in the news, and as (when I gained some cultural/political awareness) a rhetorical tool to some ideological end.

I've def heard horror stories from my partner who works retail hell. They work openings and there have been so many instances where the key holder just doesn't show up and no one's there to open the store and the managers are unresponsive.
