The thing is the headways are already halved thanks to the regional connector, so this wouldn’t cause frequency to drop any further.

I’d have the two lines interline for a few stations. I’m not entirely sure where the turnback tracks are but maybe somewhere between South Pasadena and Sierra Madre Villa.

A common proposal I’ve seen is to break it at Union, which is a terrible idea because 1. It undoes the one seat ride benefit the RC was built to fix. 2. Easy B/D-A transfers at 7MC are forced into the LAUS labyrinth. 3. Forces two transfers in a row for Foothill-East LA travelers which is absurd.

The last two trains don’t go to Pomona. They stop at APU/Citrus College. I don’t know how often I would run it, but it sucks that an incident in South LA affects trains across the entire line.

This would enable the ability to walk from the Metro station to anywhere in the Village Plaza and the JACC plaza without having to cross a road.

Also one about further pedestrianizing Little Tokyo. This would include closing 2nd Street to cars between San Pedro and the entrance to Joe’s Parking (which would be turned into a roundabout) and Central Ave between 1st Street and the parking garage entrance at Japanese Village Plaza.

Or just convert the roads to green space. Make it a trail with a few spots to stop and sit. Again, this is a steep hill, so might have to get creative like how Grand Park is structured for pedestrians.

So yeah, housing? Hmm. I'm all for removing Flower and Kosciuszko by the station. You might be able to carve some space for another tower or two by the Skye apartments (the Flower Towers?) but would have to take out the swimming pool or tennis courts. And stay clear of 2nd or else hit the tunnel.

If you've ever been by the shaft, it can be quite loud, and I don't know how many people would want to live next to what is essentially a roaring engine 24/7.

Many point to the parcel of land southwest of the station. It's pretty big and you could increase real estate by knocking out Flower, but in addition to this steep grade, also on this parcel of land is the regional connector's ventilation shaft, visible in this image by Hope St.

First of all, yeah. Sucks that it's wedged between three roads. The connector bridge helps get you to Grand Ave. Second, there IS a fair amount of housing within 1000 feet of the station, but unlike a lot of transit stations surrounded by 5-over-1s, the Bunker Hill housing is much more vertical.

Now that I can call Grand Av Arts/Bunker Hill my home Metro station, I feel I can speak better about the many Reddit posts and that one video from lej_explains about the TOD around the station.

Big downtown events like parades, festivals, and conventions like Anime Expo make me wonder how the fuck we ever lived without the regional connector.

The thing about those busways is they aren’t really busways. They share traffic with private vehicles. They just have to pay a toll, so it usually results in less traffic, but I have definitely been on a J more than once in a congested express lane. Usually approaching the 105.

Metro's proposal for Historic Broadway bus lanes vs. my own.
Metro proposes removing outdoor dining to add bus lanes to Broadway.I propose removing car traffic, adding bus lanes and bike lanes, and expanding the dining section of Historic Broadway.

I’m just going by Metro’s guidelines. Personally I think they should be stronger but I don’t make the rules.

Would you say the J merits full BRT status?
100
Corey Barnes 🚴🏻‍♀️🚊 (they/them) @side.coreymbarnes.com · 31/05/2026
100% of the Vermont BRT will be dedicated bus lanes, so it gets in. NoHo-Pas won’t be 100%, but it’ll crack the 50% minimum requirement. No idea why it’s that low. Lincoln is too far away to know.
110
Corey Barnes 🚴🏻‍♀️🚊 (they/them) @side.coreymbarnes.com · 31/05/2026
It depends on the section. If it’s all like the Figueroa section, yeah. If it’s all like the Olive section, no. Keep in mind the J only has dedicated bus lanes downtown. While it’s on a freeway, it shares the HOT lanes with traffic.

Also, I think even if Vermont opens first, it will still get the L, because no one wants to call a line that goes straight through South LA the N line.

Corey Barnes 🚴🏻‍♀️🚊 (they/them) @side.coreymbarnes.com · 31/05/2026
Metro’s BRT guidelines state that only full BRT will get special designated branding while the 5 lite BRT lines will not.

I could make a scrapbook of photos of people parking in the La Brea bus lanes during designated bus only hours. And no, these weren’t a few minutes past 4 PM. These were deep into peak hours.

Wow. Spencer Pratt sounds like Trump: fake victimhood, nonstop grievance, speaking in superlatives like it’s wisdom. And folks are falling for it. People just need to admit they don’t want honesty. They want a charismatic con man who tells them what they want to hear while picking their pockets.

Burbank, CA folks: this is likely the last chance to get Burbank City Council on board with Metro’s original plans for the NoHo to Pasadena BRT Project: side-running lanes with street parking preserved. They currently support mixed-flow lanes along Olive Ave., but that defeats the purpose of BRT 🚨🚌🚏

Mr. Charlie’s is as good as everyone says it is, but it’s in one of the worst places imaginable to get to by transit: on La Brea near Melrose Ave. The D extension will make it slightly easier, but it’ll still be a 212 bus trip north.
