Long advocated for assessing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) beyond the family level, incorporating community-level adversities like discrimination, violence, and poverty, because these stressors disproportionately impact racial/ethnic minoritized communities and impact health outcomes.

I *will* continue working on this Discussion section, even though I just received some new data in my inbox that I *really* want to analyze. This is the restraint of a future PI, right? 😜

As OMB considers major changes to federal grantmaking, trainees need stable, merit-based funding and confidence that government and the scientific community are invested in their futures. Grateful to collab with Adriana Bankston, Crystal Hammond, JP Flores, Kassandra Fernandez & Amy Ralston.

Triple the rate. 3 times more likely to have grants suspended. “Compared to the all NIH-funded investigators in 2024, investigators who received targeted terminations were more likely to self-identify as… Black/African American (n = 86, 11.9% vs 4.0%)”

Science can help address pressing challenges, but only if we train scientists to communicate in the places people actually form beliefs.

Questions for NIH connoisseurs: in this climate how best to deal with moving to a new institution if an expected NGA for a NEW NIH grant has not arrived yet? Delay your move or risk asking NIH to hold/delay NGA till you have moved and all paperwork and protocols are approved?

I'm so saddened to hear about Debby. She was such a bright light to me in my early career days at RSA, and a genuine joy to talk to. Her legacy as a lifeline and wonderful person will continue far beyond today. All my love to her family.💔 @rsaofficial.bsky.social

Congress rejected massive cuts to US science budgets for 2026, but much of the money still isn’t flowing to researchers. The culprit? The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is quietly slow-walking the release of funds. 🧵👇

The US Congress rejected sweeping cuts to science agencies. But the NIH, the NSF and NASA have had their spending slowed.

Check this out straight from the NIH website, acknowledging that multiyear funding was likely responsible for a 20% decrease in early stage investigators. And that it was expected. A strange approach for someone so committed to the next generation of scientists. grants.nih.gov/news-events/...
Screenshot from an NIH website reading: "Table 1 shows the number of principal investigators (PIs) applying for or receiving an R01-equivalent grant in FYs 2021 to 2025, disaggregated by career stage. NIH supported 1,423 and 1,144 ESIs in FYs 2024 and 2025, respectively. The decrease seen in FY 2025 may likely be due in part to NIH implementing a requirement to use 50% of its remaining competing Research Project Grant (RPG) funds (starting in June 2025) for full-year funded competing RPGs, which was expected to lead to fewer awards and support fewer researchers overall."

This was such a powerful session. While our journeys through research feel so individual, the ability to hear about one another's resilience is not only empowering, it's essential to create a community with sustained investment from scientists.
