'Autumn' entered English in the 1300s. "The fall of the leaves" was shortened to 'fall' in the 1600s.

A desperate king did give his daughter as a stopper of some sea serpent’s fearsome appetite. But then someone’s youngest son did sail against the creature’s might and clutch the girl away. And so the king did happily donate the beautiful princess to this hardest of his kingdom’s hard men.

The good fairy was wandless. She had broken it when she’d tried to wave it in a closet as she charitably sought to help a nice young man out, and its replacement wouldn’t be delivered until Tuesday. What was worse, some random elf had giggled and pointed to a sizeable black stain on the backside of her beautiful red satin dress, making her painfully aware that patched-up jeans, an old t-shirt and a plastic knitting needle just wouldn’t have the same magic. So what could she do with herself in the meantime except bake a few loaves of banana bread and read horoscopes to her clients on the phone?A young golden-haired woman in a red dress holds a wand in both hands. Adapted from a screenshot of a sketch in a German TV show ‘Bananas’.

“Ten Thousand Years in Ice” is an early #scifi short story by Robert Duncan Milne (1844–99) where a man frozen in the ancient past is revived in the present. Milne’s documentary style led readers of a Hungarian newspaper to believe it was true #WyrdWednesday #C19 theconversation.com/remembering-...

A Menagerie of Misfits

They keep their distance
I keep mine.
We meet in narrow places
where need outweighs caution.

Their world is built
from small permissions.
A step closer,
a touch shared
without a bite.
A moment without retreat.

Affection isn’t promised.
It arrives like a blunt fact,
without ceremony,
without apology.

I take what is offered.
I don’t ask for more.
The truth stays simple:
I wasn’t their saviour.

How we could ever have come to this pass? Is all we are asking… “Question & Answer”, by James Findlay Hendry (1912–1986) – born #OTD, 12 Sept With G.S. Fraser & Henry Treece, author, poet & translator J.F. Hendry was a contributor to the “New Apocalypse” poetic movement of the 1930s #poem #poetry

Question and Answer

How we could ever have come to this pass?
Is all we are asking. Each of our
Bursts of anti-aircraft fire
Hangs a torn wound of questions in the air.

How we could ever, like cattle at grass,
Drift with shadowless clouds, unaware,
Into this era of lightnings and war?
There is no shelter, now or ever, from that answer.
