i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

This poem by Pádraig Ó Tuama asks us to re-orient how we think about loss, memory, and closure That loss is not always final or absolute Remembering is not always a good thing, forgetting can be an act of self-care The ending of a book is the nature of stories #poetry #poemoftheday

This is part of what I'm referring to with many people demanding stories that reassure them they're a good person. They want the moral instruction because otherwise, rather than processing the reading experience, there's a thrum of "am I bad? am I bad? what if someone finds out I'm bad?"
Tumblr post by graftini:

stories about abuse are allowed to exist without reducing themselves to moral instruction. i think sometimes when people complain about the “romanticization” of abuse, what they're actually objecting to isn't necessarily the way abuse is being represented, but the fact that the representation doesn't provide them with constant moral reassurance. like, there is a difference between “this story frames abuse as desirable or inherently romantic” and “this story depicts abuse in an erotic/ambiguous/complicated way and doesn't repeatedly tell me that abuse is bad, therefore the depiction itself is irresponsible.”

The high walls of the rich demand projection. Yet some spend less time picturing houses and gardens they shall never see, more time imagining them as a locus of secrets. Beyond the wall occult orgies, mummified relatives in attics. Cellar laboratories and chained demons. – Dr. M. Benn

AI is a scourge. But it is important not to trust "AI detectors". I lost regular freelancing work because my client insisted I used AI to write copy (I didn't, but their AI detecting software said I did). This is a great thread with an excellent example of why these detectors cannot be trusted.

Today's answer to the question: What is Hookland?

What is Hookland?

Hookland is England as seen from the ghost train.

It is a fierce refusal to let psychogeographers tell you that when you talk about spirits of place you can’t really believe in them. It is all the books you borrowed time and time again from the library as a child – encyclopaedias of horror films, Usborne’s Worlds of the Unknown UFOs and Charles Berlitz’s The Bermuda Triangle.

It is walking home through the woods in November mist and feeling that the place has monsters, not the sort they made into Aurora model kits, but old, nameless things that are fed by the fear you’ve had of this place since that murder a few years back. It is the terror of living in a haunted landscape. It is the delight of living in a profoundly haunted landscape. Hookland is the place that you can almost allow yourself to believe in magic again before realising it is a territory you already inhabit. Shared space where all the broken memories of childhood are resuscitated and walking alongside you.

It is knowing the names of Soviet spacemen orbiting above and feeling the youthful power if recognising which mushrooms are poisonous. It is sneaking into fields to release crows from cruel traps and thinking up mad schemes to raise money to buy fireworks when the air becomes rich with the intoxicating smell of bonfires. It’s being more scared by gaudy movie posters for films that you haven’t ever seen than being afraid of the things your parents constantly warn you about.

It is knowing that everywhere is layers of story, layers of memory and realising you may be the ghost of someone else’s future.

On its jagged rocks, its snaring brambles, fragments of ripped cloth that you know are clues to something you have forgotten. Something important you cannot unlock.

It has a default setting of unease and déjà vu. Just when you think you are clear of it, you always turn the corner and discover you are walking its lanes.

It is home.

Might as well do these pics as a thread -- maybe I'll post one per day as I process 'em -- anyway, here's the play of light and dark on in Glencoe, Scotland.
Scotland is an absolute drama queen when it comes to landscapes -- this landscape, in landscape format, is a mounding, craggy hill-mountain (Scotland has lots of things that are neither hills nor mountains but that exist somewhere between) that is an unearthly green when the light hits it -- and the light is not always allowed through the wisps and veins of mist that crawl and slither along the tops of the ground. Here the light and shadow play nicely. Again, quite dramatically. I'd tell Scotland to calm down but then we wouldn't have places that look like this. Photo by me, Chuck Wendig
