This starts on Tuesday (6th October) #edpsychs and #edusky and #psychology types - if you’re interested in Soviet psychology, a critique of the idea of the pre-given mind as an attempt to reify the unreifiable nature of human subjectivity, and how to unlock your communist potentiality - come join!

Why don’t kids read anymore? Maybe part of the answer to this question is that neoliberalism has sucked all the joy out of learning to read with phonics programmes such as Read Write Inc This is my son’s Y1 reading book. If this doesn’t destroy a love of reading I don’t know what will.

My theoretical programme of SEANOANALYSIS is clearly superior to the Deleuzoguttarian approach, because I realised the height of radical praxis was joining the Green Party at 38 years old whereas it took Felix until he was at least 55 to come to the same conclusion.

I know it’s deeply uncool to be down on Deleuze and Guattari on Bluesky dot com but so much of their programme feels like a reaction to communist authoritarianism…which in 1968 probably made a lot of sense…but seems to be quite damaging to the idea of organising nowadays.

I think one of the problems with developing quality political representation on the left is that most leftists aren’t interested in garnering individual power, attending boring meetings, reading dull constitutions, plotting pathetic coups etc.

I’m really interested in a Marxist Psychological reconceptualisation of agency that allows for acknowledging the structural imperatives of capitalism (material, ideological, repressive) whilst also accepting that as individuals we have the power to choose our own way to navigate such structures.

And so it goes. The logics of capitalism turn over, now creating monopolies in the education system like they have done in every other sector. Remember Michael Gove talking about freedom and choice in relation to academisation? Well it ends with EDUCORP being the sole provider of a shit service

Loved this. Great example of American film making. Full of ideas and depth, but never losing sight of the humanity of its characters, bashing you round the head with its message or creating a sense that the director thought everyone except them is an idiot (my problems with Eddington fwiw).

Whatever anyone says, I’ll play this as a win. Either this *is* Lukacs and I get to look like a clever boy who knows theory on the internet, or it’s *not* and then I’ll just say I invented my own brand new theory live on Bluesky dot com, which I will name ‘SEANIFICATION’
000
Sean Octigan @shocktigan.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
Lukacs-heads correct me if I’m wrong, but is there an aspect of reification that doesn’t just turn human subjects into objects, but also objects into subjects (think the way economists talk about the FTSE100 like a little baby that needs taking care of) This feels v strongly like that.

I’ve been working-up a seminar on the illusory nature of our reified selves, how we are shackled to ideological hierarchies post-hoc by the oppressive structures of capital, and how ultimately subjectivity is a process of *becoming*, produced through our social relations and material conditions

Sean Octigan @shocktigan.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
In researching for my seminar series and thinking about the ideological violence of psychology, I found that 96% of studies in the top psych journals gather data from just 12% of the world’s population (bet you can’t guess their demographic makeup) and then present the findings as universal

Think it’s really important, in the light of Jason Arday’s tragic death, to note that IQ as a construct emerged as liberalism’s attempt retain the racist/sexist/anti-lgbt core of eugenics, whilst discursively claiming to have moved on to something more ‘scientific’

IQ alongside psychometrics as a whole is a way of abstracting the individual from their social relations and presenting intelligence (or traits more widely) as fixed and apolitical. It is one of psychology’s most damaging and dangerous practices.

I think many people take this seriously, but thats irrelevant in many ways as no one in power is going to do anything without general strike levels of grassroots collective action forcing them to. It’s vital we shift from the mindset that govt will do something if things get bad enough. They won’t

Central question: how do we theorise and practice a radical psychology that can push back on liberal psychology’s attempts to fit individuals into a system that doesn’t work for them, in favour of changing the systems in which we live in such a way that facilitates human flourishing?
