🔭 Astronomer, astrophysicist & explorer Dr. Merieme Chadid: one of the world's first scientists to establish a major astronomical observatory in Antarctica. She set up the specialized automated telescopes & tested the optical turbulence of the atmosphere.🧵 She was born #OTD in 1969. #WomenInSTEM
A color photograph of Moroccan-French astronomer and astrophysicist Dr. Merieme Chadid (born 1969), celebrated as a pioneering explorer who established early automated telescopes in Antarctica. Caught in a candid and joyful moment, she is positioned slightly off-center, facing toward the right side of the frame with a radiant, wide smile that showcases her bright eyes. Her dark hair is pulled back neatly into a ponytail, emphasizing her facial expression. She wears a structured, textured charcoal-gray blazer over a white blouse featuring a vibrant, multicolored floral or abstract print along the neckline. Adorning her neck is a distinctive statement necklace consisting of a large, circular, engraved silver pendant suspended from a thin red cord. The background is a soft, out-of-focus interior wall with neutral, warm beige tones, creating a shallow depth of field that keeps the focus entirely on her. The overall mood is warm, intellectual, and proud, embodying the triumphant spirit of a groundbreaking scientist who shattered cultural and geographic barriers in the global astrophysics community. An historic, on-site photograph of Dr. Merieme Chadid conducting polar research during her groundbreaking 2005–2006 astronomical expedition at the Concordia Research Station in Antarctica. Positioned in the center of the frame, Dr. Chadid smiles warmly at the camera, bundled in specialized extreme-cold gear including a heavy royal blue parka with a high collar, black insulated gloves, and a plush black fur hat framing her dark, curly hair. In the immediate foreground on the left stands a large, white, high-precision automated telescope mount labeled "Astro-Physics," which she touches gently with her gloved hand. In the background, a second telescope sits mounted on a sturdy wooden tripod behind a safety netting enclosure, set against a vast, flat expanse of blinding white Antarctic ice that stretches to a crisp, cloudless blue horizon. The crisp daytime composition uses natural polar sunlight to highlight the stark, freezing conditions. The mood is adventurous and triumphant, capturing a historic milestone for women in STEM as the first astronomer to install a major dark-sky observatory in the extreme heart of the Antarctic plateau.

This being the last hours of #WorldOctopusDay is a great excuse to post this superb Mycenaean stirrup jar with a hallucinogenic-stylized octopus. Somebody clearly ate the mushrooms. 😆 🏺 1200-1100 BCE. Met Museum. 📸 me
A stylized octopus with spiral, hypnotic eyes and flanked by fish covers each side of this stirrup jar, named for the shape of its handles. Mycenaean pottery often reflects Minoan-inspired themes and techniques that originated on the island of Crete. Animated marine motifs adopted from Minoan art began to appear on Mycenaean vessels in about 1500 BCE and were initially rendered in a very naturalistic manner. Here, the symmetrical composition and abstract depiction of the sea creatures are characteristically Mycenaean.

Such jars were commonly used to transport liquids.

Mycenaean, Late Helladic IIIC, ca. 1200-1100 BCE.

H. 10 1/4 in. (26 cm); diameter 8 7/16 in. (21.5 cm)

#ResistanceRoots Mary Engle Pennington was born on this day in 1872 in Nashville, Tenn. She was a pioneering bacteriological chemist, food scientist and refrigeration engineer who developed the “cold chain” of food safety. Every time you buy fresh food or open your fridge, thank Dr. Pennington. /1
Mary Engle Pennington in 1940. Dr. Pennington’s legacy is woven into the fabric of modern food systems and public health. As a chemist and engineer, she took a chaotic, unregulated and often lethal food supply network and engineered it into a secure, predictable system. Every time we open a modern home refrigerator, buy a fresh carton of milk or eat frozen foods shipped across continents, we are benefiting from her research and development. Before her work, bacterial contaminants in unrefrigerated food were a death sentence for American children. With the distribution of 1.5 million free domestic safety bulletins, she taught an entire nation how to properly cool and zone food. Pennington also battled systemic gender discrimination, not with loud protests, but with bulletproof, undeniably superior empirical data. We owe a debt of gratitude to this brilliant, soft-spoken Quaker who quietly saved millions of lives by keeping food cool. Photo credit: Smithsonian Institution.

It's #WorldOctopusDay! Here's an 1861 clipping from the London Illustrated Times of 'A Marine Monster Discovered Near Teneriffe'. From the description, it's likely that this was a giant squid rather than an octopus, but it's described as a 'giant polypus' by the crew.
A clipping from the London Illustrated News of a short article with a large illustration, showing a huge squid-like creature with one massive eye being ensnared by a net and dragged towards a ship. The crew watch on, shocked.
