In next week’s edition of What Is My Life, I’m filming half a dozen people dressed as d&d classes on location at a horse farm in the woods. Sure. Right. No big deal.

Aha, a very helpful apostrophe history chart!
Anne McCaffrey, whose popular Dragonriders of Pern series included character names such as F’lar. Dragonflight, the first book in the series was published in 1968, but appeared in short story form in Analog science fiction magazine in late 1967. Although McCaffrey may have been extraordinarily influential in popularizing this use of the apostrophe, I did find a few earlier examples.
YEAR DETAILS
1955 J'onn J'onnz (a character), Detective Comics
1959 Hawaii becomes a state (Hawai'i, Maui, O'ahu, Kaho'olawe, Lanai, Moloka'i, Kaua'i and Ni'ihau)
1965 Muad'Dib (a creature and a constellation), Dune, Frank Herbert
1967 TPau and T'Pring (characters), Star Trek, "Amok Time," Theodore Sturgeon
1968 F'lar (character), Dragonflight, Anne McCaffrey (published in short story form in October and December of 1967.)
1969 Pei'ans (a race), Isle of the Dead, Roger Zelazny
1969 D'donori (a place) Creatures of Light and Darkness, Roger Zelazny

Again, there is clear evidence a data center moratorium would peel far more votes away from the GOP than the 10-15 (not thousand, literally 10-15 total) who might switch over this same crowd’s demand to betray queer people. It’s malpractice that the party won’t ditch these professional losers.

Chronic health kids, don’t forget to stay up on your meds & supplements as the nights get longer. This is a note to myself as much as anything. Things have been feeling gradually off all September, either I’m more aware of it this year or my October slide will be a free fall.

When it comes to puberty blockers, the anti-trans crowd loves to point to bone density loss as lifelong damage being done to the body, but is it really permanent? @veraeikon.bsky.social digs into a study released in August that examines the actual impacts and how they can be mitigated.

Irreversible Damage? Debunking the Myths of Puberty Blockers - Assigned Media
Countless myths have been built up about the supposed harms of puberty blockers on youth. Assigned Media looks at a 2026 study that strives to debunk those myths.

"All of us have to learn how to invent our lives, make them up, imagine them. We need to be taught these skills; we need guides to show us how. Without them, our lives get made up for us by other people." Thinking about these words from Le Guin today in honor of those who imagined new ways for us. ♥️
Home, imagined, comes to be. It is real, realer than any other place, but you can’t get to it unless your people show you how to imagine it—whoever your people are. They may not be your relatives. They may never have spoken your language. They may have been dead for a thousand years. They may be nothing but words printed on paper, ghosts of voices, shadows of minds.

But they can guide you home. They are your human community.

All of us have to learn how to invent our lives, make them up, imagine them. We need to be taught these skills; we need guides to show us how. Without them, our lives get made up for us by other people.

Human beings have always joined in groups to imagine how best to live and help one another carry out the plan. The essential function of human community is to arrive at some agreement on what we need, what life ought to be, what we want our children to learn, and then to collaborate in learning and teaching so that we and they can go on the way we think is the right way [....]

In our time of huge populations exposed continuously to reproduced voices, images, and words used for commercial and political profit, there are too many people who want to and can invent us, own us, shape and control us through seductive and powerful media. It’s a lot to ask of a child to find a way through all that alone. Nobody can do anything very much, really, alone.

What a child needs, what we all need, is to find some other people who have imagined life along lines that make sense to us and allow some freedom, and listen to them. Not hear passively, but listen.

I'm not going to tag Ursula in this (though she's welcome to reply) because my thread isn't going to be about the Astarion book or if BG3 is a "horny" game or any of that nonsense. Instead, this is about the online demands for the perfect rape victim in fiction. (thread)
Just chiming in on this. Astarion is very much loved by people bc of this trauma and SA survival. Reducing the audience to just horny poeple and its a horny game comes across as a bit disrespectful. Why did you make it smutty during a time when he was gtting SD'd like A LOT?

Ursula: the book also covers large chunks of his youth.

reply: while you ask us to give the book a chance, some current reviews raise concerns about asterion being out of character, esp the choice to give him intimate moments during a period when he's heavily affected by SA. I'd genuinely like to understand why.

My four favourite facts about the cockchafer beetle: 1. It's called a cockchafer beetle. 2. It’s also sometimes known as a “billywitch”. 3. It’s unusually loud and clumsy by beetle standards and bangs into lots of things when it flies into your house by mistake. 4. It looks like this, close up.
A cockchafer beetle, demonstrating its talent for multitasking by showing us its pad while also listening with great sympathy to our problems.

Went to go see the exhibit of Lewis Hine’s photography at the Frick Museum. He was known for his work documenting immigrants, workers, and child laborers, leading to child labor reform. His work is incredible on so many levels. Beautiful and devastating all at once.
“A Little Spinner” Lewis Hine, 1909, Globe Cotton Mill in Augusta, GA.

A young girl with blunt-bobbed hair and a dirty smock stares directly into the camera, flanked by cotton thread spoolers. Lewis Hine's 1920 Power house mechanic working on steam pump, one of his "work portraits", shows a working class American in an industrial setting. The carefully posed subject, a young man with wrench in hand, is hunched over, surrounded by the machinery that defines his job.Carrying-in boy at glass factory in Alexandria, VA. Lewis Hine, 1912.
An eleven year old boy with a slightly sad expression looks directly into the camera from the floor of a glass factory. Russian Jew at Ellis Island, Lewis Hine. The man wears a long dark coat and is starkly lit against the windows behind him.
