The movie doesn’t tell you it’s a KKK raid; the book does. Rhett then provides an alibi for the surviving men. Selznick knew that explicitly identifying the KKK was explosive, so the film leaves the Klan name out and refers to the men’s gathering as a “political meeting.” 4/

It’s even centered in and around Atlanta. The burning of Atlanta is one of the most famous sequences in movie history. You can criticize how the movie depicts slavery without pretending slavery is the story the movie set out to tell. It’s not.
