🚨🚨 Submission Call Time! 🚨🚨 We're going to be open for submissions for ONE HOUR... late tonight/early tomorrow morning! shoutout the night owls, the early risers, but maybe most of all, the int'l peeps! this link will be live between 4am and 5am ET havehashad.submittable.com/submit/32629...
Submissions will open for one full hour, so insofar as you're racing, you're doing so against the clock rather than each other.

BUT. We're HAD, so we gotta mix it up.

Let's make that hour middle of the night! (At least for me here on the east coast. And, really most of us in the US.) Y'all gotta stay up late, or wake up early, or wake up in the middle of the night just to prove to us you love us, or be international (I hope this time works for the international skullers?).

Which is all to say...
Submissions will be Thursday, April 24, 4am – 5am ET.

A few specifics:
No theme
600 words max
Any/all genre ok
For poems and reeeeal short stuff, you can send two, but make 'em short!

You (probably, hopefully) know the deal.I am going to try to get through as many as possible, as fast as possible, but its a timed call rather than quantity so I have no idea how many I'll get, so getting through everything might spill over into the next day or two... or longer? We'll see!

This @amystuber.com story is the best story I’ve read in a while. Working my way through this collection slowly, savoring a story here, a story there, and it’s all pretty great; this story alone is worth picking it up.
Doctor Visit
You have the tiniest little baby cataracts, the ophthalmologist tells me, and he laughs, because apparently, cataracts, when small, are funny. I'm in the chair with the thing that looks like a 1970s TV robot hovering in front of my face and I don't think it's funny because 1) all I can imagine is my eyes becoming increasingly cloudy and unusable and 2) cataracts are in most cases a final-third-of-life thing or at least indication you've stopped walking on a path and are now on the stairs, and who knows how many stairs there will be, but you're on the stairs.
Ishould mention that we are fucking, the ophthalmologist and me--not in the office, but as a routine. And with some brutality, because I've never had patience for sex that is soft.
Even though he's divorced, and I'm divorced, we don't fuck in beds. We meet. Cars on farm roads. Bathrooms of chain stores. Basements of open houses. Once in a com maze at a pumpkin patch. It's always quick and fleeting, no lounging on comforters after, and thus a reminder about life and how it's easier but worse to hold yourself out, to stay cloudy and beyond harm.hand holding paperback:

y'all @lindsaylerman.bsky.social's interview with Sarah LaBrie in @thecreativeindependent.com is so good 😭 made me want to write! thecreativeindependent.com/people/write...
We have to tell stories, and we have to tell them in the best possible way we can, in our moment in history. And so I was like, OK, fine. I'll serve the gods of literature in whatever way I need to, even if that means that I produce something that I couldn't imagine myself producing 10 years ago. But that's good. I have to change. We have to change.

I love that. Yeah. Then maybe that's what our social responsibility is, because I definitely don't think it's our responsibility as writers to show people what's right. I don't know that what I'm talking about is even a political responsibility. It's not. It's to keep writing and to write well and to be true to whatever that invisible dream force is that drives you to do it is, as opposed to the one that says, make as much money as you can and then die.
