Industrial capital invested in the expansion of culture and literacy to create an educated working class (tho they couldn’t control how workers thought). Tech capital is investing in mass deliteracy while building no public cultural institutions. They haven’t abandoned culture, just privatized it.

relatedly— i don’t think we give enough credit to the fact both Stepford Wives and Rosemary’s Baby, two texts that are really about the horrors that threaten women’s autonomy via marriage, family reproduction, and men, were written by Ira Levin. Clearly someone was noticing things!
