This week on #RunawayToTheStars: Huh. That doesn't seem right. Catch up: runawaytothestars.com Read ahead: patreon.com/jayrockin

Doug: She's probably already listening. She has very good hearing. Talita looks up from where she has pressed her face against the corner wall of her bedroom with a start. She is younger, with round glasses and large baggy black hoodie. Both the humans around the coffee table and Talita in her bedroom are shown in an impossibly clean cross section of the entire building, which cuts through windows, walls, furniture, and objects with atomic precision, revealing their interior structure. Next to the break room with Doug and the others is a reception area with a desk and mailboxes. It's decorated with a banner of colorful eggs and flowers, and a large paper wall art "reading "HAPPY FEASTER!" flanked by vegetables and a cartoon chabbit holding a broom. On the floors above the break room and the lobby are the dormitories for foster teens, with hallways in the middle. Next to all the dormitory bedroom doors hang miniature decorated brooms, some doors with many more brooms than others. Each of the bedrooms is in a different state of disarray, all with multiple bunk beds and teenage residents who have decorated and arranged their belongings in unique ways. Talita’s bedroom in contrast houses only her, with a large mattress on the floor and an electronics work desk in between her dressers. The ceiling light fixture is unscrewed, with its wiring split between the light and a cable running towards the work desk, seemingly as another source of power after all the wall outlets were occupied by splitters and extension cables. Her posters and decorations feature human celebrity heart throbs and aircraft. Wind spinners hang in front of her window. Outside the cross section, even more impossible, is Earth's deep sea. The building appears to sit directly on the abyssal plain, its cut rooms open to the environment as if the surrounding water were just more air. Brittle stars and sea pigs crawl on the ground next to the floor of the lobby, while crinoids pop up outside the break room like flowers. A group of snail fish swim lazily around the bisected edge of the break room’s window, and far off in the distant dark waters, a bigfin squid drifts by.

Last week on #RunawaytotheStars: Talita's second set of eyelids, ASL facial grammar, and imminent bone peeling. Catch up: runawaytothestars.com Read ahead: patreon.com/jayrockin

Talita frowns and shakes her head. Talita: (ASL) I don’t have eyebrows. Gillie: (ASL) You’ve got those… uh… white eyelids? Talita: (English) My nictitating membranes? She squints the two white inner "eyelids" that lie underneath her outer feathered eyelids. Talita: (English) I do use them to imitate human expressions. I picked it up as a kid. It's kind of a reflex now. Gillie: (ASL) Try mimicking the eyebrow signals with them. Talita grasps her neck nervously and stares off into the distance, considering this. Talita: (English) Oh… I… I don’t know… It wouldn’t really… look similar… Gillie looks at the transcription on her phone, unimpressed. She puts it down and flutters a hand to distract Talita from her anxious spiral. Gillie: (ASL) Hey hey hey hey! Stop over-thinking. Copy me.

Gillie launches into a series of demonstration sentences. STATEMENT Gillie: (ASL) Nice to meet you! Gillie has an open smile and neutral eyes. Talita copies her, albeit looking considerably more panicked. Talita: (ASL) Nice to meet you! "WH" QUESTION: LOWERED EYEBROWS Gillie: (ASL) What’s your name? Gillie furrows her eyebrows to make a neutral questioning face. Talita, face starting to bristle, slightly squints her outer eyelids and lowers her upper nictitating membranes. Talita: (ASL) What’s your name? YES/NO QUESTION: RAISED EYEBROWS Gillie: (ASL) Are you copying me? Gillie raises her eyebrows to make a questioning face, and exaggerates it into an expression of feigned indignation. Talita, mane fluffing out and cheeks bristling and about to combust from embarrassment, copies her by widening her eyes and raising her lower nictitating membranes. Talita: (ASL) Are you copying me?

Gillie opens her palms towards Talita and wiggles her hands in the air, Deaf applause. Talita smiles, flustered but proud. Gillie: (ASL) It's not the same, but I can totally tell you're making question faces! Talita: (English) That’s a relief. She rubs her face, noticing the velvet on her antler is itching. She asks Gillie a "WH" question with her approximation of furrowed eyebrows. Talita: (ASL) Where’s the trash can? Gillie: (ASL) Yeah, like that! Talita: (ASL) No, actual question. Gillie: (ASL) Oh! Over there. Gillie points off to her side. In the distance beyond both of them, Idrisah can be seen praying on a rug.

Saw this wonderful Animorphs comic by @wolfziedraws.bsky.social. It's no secret I LOVE Tobias. Rachel caring and leaving him Salisbury steaks nightly endeared me to their friendship as he struggled between the animal & human life. Check out their more active tumblr! www.tumblr.com/wolfziedraws...

Titled: Would you still love me if I turned into a bald eagle?

From the series Animorph, a fancomic.
Panel 1:
Rachel on the ground yelling "Tobias!"
Tobias in a tree telespeaking <Hey Rachel!>
Panel 2:
a four part transformation sequence of Rachel turning into a bald eagle and says <Ready to fly>?
Panel 3:
Tobias looking stunned and mesmerized with little hearts around his thoughts and whispering to himself <wow>
Rachel is off screen trying to get his attention back. <uhh... hello? Earth to Tobias...>

Think I just found my favorite Eastern Screech-owl photo ever. By Christina Evans, in the Macaulay Library: macaulaylibrary.org/asset/621156... 🪶

Photo of a young screech owl perched on a log, low center of the image. Its eyes are wide open with tiny pupils, mouth agape, as it focuses on a Blue Jay perched just above and slightly out of focus.

This week on #RunawayToTheStars: attempts to flee, faces Gillie's wrath, and admits the truth. Catch up: runawaytothestars.com Read ahead: patreon.com/jayrockin

Idrisah and Gillie watch in surprise as Talita abruptly begins to turn around and head for the door, panicking. Talita: S- sorry, I still don't think I'm... ready... I'll come by later!! Gillie flushes with anger and leaps across the couch to grab Talita’s shirt sleeve. SFX: GRAB Talita stops walking and looks back at her in shock. Gillie is furious, ears flattened back, short white tail bristling. Gillie: (ASL) Do you want my help with sign or not!?

Gillie: (ASL) I'm not going to keep offering if you're gonna walk out every time! You’re being so fucking rude! Talita, hunched on all sixes, cringes away from Gillie's anger as her face begins to bristle with shame. Gillie: (ASL) If you don’t want to sign, I won’t force you. But I hate relying on this buggy app to talk to you! Idrisah awkwardly stands behind the couch with her bowl of fried crickets, politely looking away from the confrontation with a nervous sweat breaking out on her forehead. Gillie: (ASL) I don’t get it!! You’ve clearly gone out of your way to learn comprehension. Is this a pity project that you’re too bored with to finish?! Gillie slumps on down on the arm of the couch, looking at her phone as she waits for Talita to reply. Talita sits, quietly staring at her with an expression of devastation. Talita: No, I’m… She struggles to extract the words for what she's feeling. Talita: Embarrassed.

Gillie: (ASL) Why?? Gillie looks back to her phone angrily. Idrisah walks closer, looking apologetically between Gillie and Idrisah. Idrisah: Talita, it's a language that was never intended for your body. We won't judge you if you struggle to pick it up. Talita: I’m going to judge myself. Gillie sneers. Gillie: (ASL) For what!? Not being human? Talita cringes as if she'd been struck. She makes an admission as heavy as it is small. Talita: Yes.
