A poorly planned Thanksgiving dinner. Still pretty darned good. Description in alt.
Duck sausage dressing, spinach in duck fat (aka liquid love), duck breasts, and mashed purple potatoes. And orange cranberry relish (in the cup).

I am amused by the "dark academia" literary genre. 1) is there any other kind of academia? 2) only seems to take place in English departments. 3) They have way cooler offices than I have ever seen. 4) Tweed! 5) I have to tell my mom that it is not like that--it's different and worse. Still: fun.

Another book rec, especially for those of you who prefer audiobooks. The Future of Truth by Werner Herzog. A true genius and nutter. Hearing him read his own words with his accent and cadence increases the impact.

Very happy that former McGill professor, Anne Carson won the Nobel Prize in literature. Strongly commend Autobiography of Red -- it will transport you. Caveat: you need to invest quite a bit of energy and time in reading it. Worth it.

Today’s role model of science is Richard Owen: Scooby Doo villain archetype, coiner of the word “dinosaur.” Described as "social experimenter with a penchant for sadism. Addicted to controversy and driven by arrogance and jealousy” "a damned liar. He lied for God and for malice” “An odious man.”

You got this! When the work gets hard, I try to remember how privileged I am to be able to work hard. But mostly I sweat, swear, and feel sorry for myself (but still do it).

Classic. It just occurred to me that I casually used profanity when teaching over the last few weeks. Typically, I don't do that--not the specific type of professionalism I want to project. Time to fucking stop that shit.

I stick to the bro code of keeping the same sports fandom since I was 8 years old or my universities (e.g., Detroit sports teams and UFlorida teams). It is fun to develop a new fandom over the last couple years. Can't wait to see Phil, Abby, the Victoire, and their gorgeous sweaters defend the cup.

14 months of cancer treatments are now over and generally recovered from. Hosting friends and supportive folks is over for a bit. Now is the time to take inventory of what remains; then the rest of 2026 and beyond is dedicated to reassembling body, mind, work, and soul. #survivorship 💪

My beloved Detroit Red Wings #lgrw (fan since I was 4 years old saw a Game at Olympia and Gordie Howe patted my head with his smelly glove) are close to losing a fan. A fail son owner appears to be taking the promising team down to the basement. Still time for redemption, but there is short leash.

Knowledge is NOT politically neutral. The scientific method is a tool for deriving knowledge. So why then, are we telling the arbiters of the scientific method and developers of knowledge to be politically neutral? Are scientists supposed to forsake knowledge for politics sake?
