this class I’m enrolled in wants 48 hours a week of work spent outside of class, if we factor in my job and the fact I have to do around 7 hours of club activities for this class and the time I’m in class it comes out to like 89 hours a week of work and if I split that up. I’m working 12 hours a day

I’m in awe, like truly I feel like I’ve grown so much as a writer and my Japanese language journey has probably been the thing to help the most. Sometimes I feel like going back to school in my 30s was a waste of time and money, but this is a moment where it feels worth it!

Y’all my Sensei is trying to make me cry again. I looked at his evaluation of my japanese to english translation course and the praise is like more than I feel I deserve. He works as a professional translator for pokemon so it feel like high praise.

If it doesn’t charge users and, so far, doesn’t serve them any ads, how does Duolingo make money? It tricks you into working as an unpaid translation service. At the end of some lessons, Duolingo will ask you if you want to practice by translating a real-world document. Which will turn out to be, say, a BuzzFeed article. By melding together enough stabs at this task from high-level Duolingo users, the app can render a surprisingly accurate translation. Which is worth good money. So far, Duolingo has contracts with BuzzFeed and CNN to translate stories from English into languages such as Spanish, French, and Portuguese. This service is already earning Duolingo hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, but von Ahn predicts he will be adding a raft of new clients soon. “The language translations market is huge,” he says. “It’s a $30 billion per year market.”

I think the smartest thing Nintendo has done over time is to not number their games. No one is sitting here being unable to play a Zelda game cause they haven’t played the first. Which is why it makes sense for megaman 12 to drop the numbers and go with “dual override”

Fun fact: "Reviewing an AI made translation" is more work for translators than just translating it themselves, because AI translations do not pass the sniff test beyond the most superficial. It's a loophole companies use as an excuse to underpay translators, and nothing else.
