I really do think tech crossed a line at some point between "helping you do the things you want to do" on the one hand, and "helping you do the things tech wants you to do" on the other. At this point, we're all contorting ourselves to live how the tech industry thinks we should be living.

I do hope that Hollywood realizes that the popularity of Heated Rivalry was not because of the hockey but because of the romance and they can make wildly successful romance stories that aren’t specifically tied to hockey cause right now it feels like they’re missing the point LOL

Much of our sitting government is in office because it ignored rape or committed rape. At times, it seems like a job requirement. Much of our media has learned to ask evidentiary standards of survivors that they’d never hold a powerful man to.

So tired of this endless bullshit... I was 11. He was my father. I have had much therapy, but there are still issues with white hot murderous rage and shame exacerbated by living in a society that continues to protect and venerate such pathetic men.

To the people complaining these sex abuse cases have created a world where men now have to think 10 times before they touch a woman. Yes, that's the point. It's called consent. Welcome to human decency.

I have now officially attended my first in person Heated Rivalry fan meetup and I have threads and discord to thank for that. It’s so interesting but not surprising to observe how my three major fandom experiences have all been tied to vastly different social media channels.

Still having way too much fun on threads. The algorithm over there has me figured out!

I have been on threads less than 24 hours and in that time I have been greeted by a ton of Loons, rec'ed a fic, acquired 130+ followers, joined a DMV HR discord and WhatsApp group, and a Baltimore HR threads group, and began planning a local meetup at my bookstore for two weeks from now!

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.

Writing fanfiction is real writing and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. It doesn’t have to be “practice” or serious business, and there’s no upper age limit on it. If smashing blorbos together brings you joy, that’s the only reason you need.

I have now received an Anthropic Copyright settlement notice to review my claim. I don't think I am in a position to dispute anything, and receiving this was satisfying on a certain level. I still, however, have no plans to give Anthropic any of my own money ever to use any of its AI tools.

As a university professor, I find it fun and endearing to read university AU fanfic. It reminds me of my student days and makes university seem like a fun glamorous place (full of dramatic romance) and not just a place of work and stress.

Why young people hate AI even more?

The industry is incapable of any self-reflection, but it should be obvious why this would be the case. Older gens saw Big Tech innovations that changed people's daily lives for the better and/or were at least mixed bags. Personal computers, internet, mp3 players, smart phones, etc. Someone who is 18 has seen.... what? NFT scams and crypto rug pulls. Web 3.0 hype that went nowhere. Gig economy apps that exploit workers and still charge too much for poor service. Zuckerberg's metaverse. A bunch of crap that massively enriched some billionaires without seeming to improve people's lives. Why should any young person look at big tech companies hyping GenAI—who were all pushing metaverse/crypto/etc. a few years ago—and think it would help them?

Tonight’s “teaching L2 reading and writing” class expressed strong mistrust of AI for educational practices. This is probably the most AI skeptical class I have taught, and it includes students who have taken AI-focused courses in their undergraduate studies.

The amount of working artists I've spoken to who are losing or have lost the ability to make a viable career out of it due largely to people's use of genAI instead of hiring artists is genuinely so upsetting. We won't know what we've lost until it's gone.

When I was a student, international students became some of my closest friends, a few became partners, and many more were integral in shaping my learning and view of the world. Many are still a part of my life! This is a devastating loss for current US universities and domestic students.

I talk a great deal about reading for pleasure; I’ve written elsewhere about the necessity of pleasure in the classroom, and why it is not an optional extra but the hallmark of true education. We must find ways to show children that reading gives you access to an inexhaustible source of delight. But I worry, too, that we are limiting the meaning of the word pleasure. Learning is a strange and discomfiting experience; it’s a struggle and a frustration, and epiphanies are rare. It is not always pleasure in its easiest sense.
