No, your Magic 8 Ball is not conscious, and it does not have feelings. Also, the burden of proof in this debate is not on me.

No idea what people mean when they say books used to use more obscure language.

Delighted that Head of Steam and Kings Head get a joint shout-out in this. Huddersfield one of the rare stations that has more pubs than trains at the moment.

I’d forgotten until today that Wu Tang Clan had a song called “For Heavens Sake”. Presumably on an album with “Typical”, “Well, Really!“ and “I’ll Just Do It Myself Shall I?”

”Did you get that photo for the cover of our flute book?” “Sure did, boss, real fucking creepy just like you asked.” “What?” … “WHAT?”
A book with the title “Complete Irish Flute Book”. The cover shows a little girl with a troubled expression holding a flute. She’s standing between the legs of a man perched on a dry stone wall. Look it’s absolutely fine, nothing untoward is going on. But jeez.

I knew Lichtenstein was a fraud, but I'm genuinely a little shocked how much worse his copy is. What a hack. Also, kudos to the original art by Tony Abruzzo, which is FAR better than it has any right to be.

NASA picture of the day today is a real 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿beauty! This is a composite image of the ~5000yo Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis. The amazing Giuseppe Petricca has only gone and photographed the Sun at noon there, every few days, for a whole year. #Dedication 🔭🧪👌 ℹ️: science.nasa.gov/image-articl...
The imposing Callanish Stones stand talk with their shadows spanning out across the glass. It's a super clear sky, but looks cold. Above the central stone is a strange figure-of-8 shape of dots. This is the location of the Sun, at noon, on various different days across the year.

What a brilliantly creepy paragraph this is, one that seems worryingly apposite to this age we live in.
"The great benefit of being in somebody's head since birth is that your voice is easily confused with their own. Over the years, I've displaced Emory's conscience and better sense. I'm trusted implicitly, because she doesn't know how alien I am." (Stuart Turton, The Last Murder at the End of the World)

Loved every page of How Railways Will Fix the Future by @garethdennis.uk , but particularly this.
"It is often claimed by campaigners and academics that it’s a shortage of evidence that prevents politicians and others from making change happen. However, there is a problem with this. In Ben Phillip’s words, “the evidence for transformational change happening because decision-makers are shown evidence is really weak”." (Gareth Dennis, How the Railways Will Fix the Future)

Murdoku is my new favourite thing - like sudoku crossed with Cluedo. (Found this one in Italy, but they‘re also in English).
