Sustainable electrolysis using light instead of wasting the battery. Copper on the cathode #chemsky #chemchat #realtimechem #beyondbenign #iTeachChem #Chemistry
This is electrolysis using light. The 8 light cells are arranged in parallel to provide a voltage of about 3 V and a current of 65 mA. Copper chloride solution is electrolysed to give copper and chlorine Bleaching litmus, affecting starch/iodide paper, and potassium iodide solution.

This graphic explains four examples of chemicals in spices having effects outside cooking. The four examples include a clove compound’s ability to treat toothaches, a nutmeg compound’s ability to cause hallucinations, a licorice extract compound’s ability to raise blood pressure, and a fenugreek compound’s ability to make urine and sweat smell like maple syrup.

The gap between teacher pay and other college graduates’ pay is the highest it’s been in over four decades. Is there a “teacher shortage,” or a shortage of jobs that treat educators with the pay, dignity, and support they deserve?

A #ChemEd #Chemistry #ChemSky summary on my favourite subject (after dairy chem of course), chirality. I love that a small change (reflection) makes a big difference. Students seem to hate chirality so here is a simple intro (more stereochem: www.makingmolecules.com/blog/tpyjoy3...)
A summary of chirality and chemistry. Introduces the idea that mirror images do not have to be the same, that they can have different properties. Tries to do it at a very simple level with not discussion of point groups or symmetry.

Happy birthday to the electron! ⚛️ #OTD in 1897, Joseph J Thomson announced his identification of the electron — the first subatomic particle to be discovered. www.compoundchem.com/2018/04/30/e... #ChemSky 🧪
Today in Chemistry History infographic on the discovery of the electron in 1897 by Sir Joseph J Thomson. Thomson discovered the electron, found the first evidence for isotopes of stable elements, and won the Nobel Prize in Physics for ‘investigations on the conduction of electricity by gases’. An annotated diagram of the cathode ray apparatus Thomson used to discover the electron is shown. The rays were deflected by an electric field. Comparing this with how much they were deflected by a magnetic field, he deduced that cathode rays were made of negatively charged particles, which he termed ‘corpuscles’. The discovery led to his ‘plum pudding’ model of the atom, with electrons scattered throughout a cloud of positive charge.
