🧪🌋Drawing clear connections between science & impacts on people (especially around natural hazards) has always mattered, but now feels more important than ever. Thrilled to teach OCG131G Volcanoes & Society this semester to a large, curious @universityofri.bsky.social student group of many majors.
Montage of images showing 3 days of lava inundation into Hawaiian towns from Kilauea volcano in 2018, and a resultant overall inundation map. Source: Montage by Kenna Rubin using individual images from the expansive and well documented USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory media archive. Lava flowed from fissures in the Leilani Estate neighborhood down the East Rift Zone, and then turned toward the sea by Kapoho, part of a prior eruption in 1960. This eruption also initiated near fissures of a prior eruption in 1955 and not too far from lava inundation in 2014 and from a large eruption in 1840. This eruption was particularly destructive to built infrastructure, as seen here flowing through homes and out to sea. So why do so many people live here, and why were these towns established in the first place? These are complex questions with cultural, social, socio economic and geological underpinnings.

🧪🌋🌊 Deep-sea volcanic pyroclast formation decoded. Most submarine eruptions don't break the sea surface & are rarely observed. We're uncovering how energetic underwater eruptions produce distinctive fragmental deposits unlike subaerial plumes. 2 modes shown here presented at #AGU25. More in ALT text
Glowing molten ejecta and freshly formed pyroclasts from a submarine volcanic eruption. Two distinct , mildly energetic eruption styles are shown at nearby vents during the 2009 West Mata eruption in northern Tonga. These common but rarely observed fully underwater eruptions produce thick, coarse pyroclastic deposits close to the vent. The deposits are unlike less frequent, but dramatic, very energetic, and more often observed eruptions that break the sea surface, such as Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai in 2022 or Havre in 2012, with eruption plumes and deposits influenced by distribution all or partly in air. Such eruptions that occur entirely beneath the sea surface produced landforms with low sea bed volcanic terrain stability, impacting the geology, hydrothermal activity, and ecosystem development. Class today was about submarine lava‐flow morphology. wearing my first true autumn outfit of the season. These flows can be even more variable than those on land, thanks to factors like depth, viscosity, effusion rate, & seafloor slope (details in caption). Images: dx.doi.org/10.5670/ocea... 🧪🌋🌊⚒️
Four examples of typical submarine lava-flow morphologies, arranged clockwise by decreasing cooling rate, with me in the center showing off my new shoes today. The rate and geometry of cooling reflects things like how fast the lava is effusing from the vent, how fast it is moving across the sea bed (e.g., from slope variations), and the viscosity of the magma. All images show very young submarine lava flows, from my collaborative research with other submarine volcanologists. Most images are from: http://dx.doi.org/10.5670/oceanog.2012.12

🧪🌊🌋⚒️ What do you do when a 2.5-km-deep Pacific Ocean volcano erupts (3rd time in 33 yrs) with the Alvin sub in the water? You pull Alvin fast, coat a weight in Crisco, toss it overboard with a wireline acoustic locator beacon, & pull up fresh lava chips the "old fashioned" way. Specimens on the way😍
Frame grab by @kennarubin.bsky.social from the unfortunately titled, but still fascinating, Woods Hole Oceanographic video "Underwater volcano explodes in the Pacific!", showing a small flash of orange glowing lava oozing from the sea bed approximately 10 m in front of the Alvin submersible on 29 April 2025. 🧪🌊 This Friday's💩: Planned evisceration of US NSF just announced- research divisions abolished, massive layoffs, radical budget cuts. Fascists hate knowledge they can't control, so the gold standard of US science is doomed & our global science leadership will follow www.science.org/content/arti...

🧪🌊📷How is it being a US university Dean during the current peak of anti-science, anti-progress rhetoric, where greed, denial & personal belief threaten fact-based discovery, #climate crisis protection, & people's lives? 😔 Depressing. Especially seeing research grants pulled & lives forever impacted.
This lone tree in a field, near my home on a snowy Rhode Island Christmas day in 2024, captures the feeling of watching the US science enterprise being dismantled by self-serving politicians and their ignorant followers. SOURCE: Original Photo (c) by Kenna Harmony Rubin

🧪🌋⚒️. Gorgeous display of glowing red flowing lava in pre-dawn light at #Kilauea #Volcano on 2 May 2025 as effusion of 8-hour-lomg Episode 19 of the ongoing of Halemaʻumaʻu #eruption, was ceasing at the vents. Basaltic Pahoehoe lava spreads like water over gently sloping landscapes like this.
This photo of a km-long glowing lava is from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Service Facebook page, shortly after the eruption paused. This brief eruption released just under 4 million cubic yards of lava — enough to fill more than 1,200 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Lava flows from the north vent spread across about half crater floor in just a few hours. Source: I cropped the original image by J. 🧪🌋⚒️ Yay 😊. Kilauea Volcano is back at it. #USGS reports that Episode 18 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption resumed at 3:20 a.m. HST on April 22 . There is high fountaining going on right now, some 2 hrs later. Watch it live! This frame grab is from live stream video (link in Alt text)

🧪🌊 Breaking dawn over #Hawaii 🌋 on day 2 of a grueling 2 months of work at sea. With the massive recent foibles, including defunding so much quality scientific research & other gov't services, this is a metaphor. Can we skip the next several years of pain & just jump right to the nuremberg trials? 📷

🧪🌋⚒️ Lava fountaining & tephra production is spectacular, but many volcanologists study the ensuing lava flows, e.g., as in these Apr-25 #USGS visual & thermal #Kilauea #Hawaii images. Length, thickness, & texture of these viscous fluid flows reflect eruption/cooling conditions, composition & rate.
Kilauea summit eruption episode 16 lava fountain and its lava flow on April 1, 2025. The lava fountain was reaching heights of more than 650 ft (200 m) at times and feeding a lava flow that as of noon on April 1 reached about 2,300 ft (700 m) from its vent. USGS photo by D. Downs. Source: USGS, https://www.usgs.gov/media/images/april-1-2025-kilauea-summit-eruption-episode-16-aerial-viewThis thermal map was taken on the 7 a.m. overflight of Kilauea summit on April 9, 2025, and shows the expansive lava flow covering the floor of Halema‘uma‘u, supplied by lava fountains at the vent. As in earlier episodes, the lava exited the vent into a short channel that fed a broad perched lava pond. Lava channels then drained this pond and carried lava farther to the east. A small ooze-out, fed by lava supplied beneath the solidified crater floor, was present in the south portion of the crater. The fountaining ended a few hours after the flight, ending episode 17. 🧪🌊 My photo seems poignant to the coming #storm. #NOAA is THE major oceanography research funder at @urigso.bsky.social & many others. Massive cuts to 'align' w/ cheeto's philosophy, or support private industry alternates, or to save 💰, are all dishonest & ruinous. www.science.org/content/arti...
A stormy morning on beautiful Waimanalo Beach on Oahu's eastern shore. Days like this are perfect times to quietky enjoy the warm water of a usually popular Hawaiian Beach, and to forget about those particular politicians and private industry infiltrators who literally ruing evey thing about the country for self interest.

🧪🌋⚒️ Wait for it ... ( #USGS #kilauea #eruption time lapse): Only 9 of 31 hours of this episode (15) were high fountains, mostly from southern of 2 active vents. Volcanoes can be episodic on min. to yr. timescales. Since 23-Dec-24, we have seen 16 roughly day-long bursts w/ little action between.
