Sgtm. I'll try to take a pass at prototyping this in Chrome too.

"Would the fastest way be for you to create an account for me on your PDS?" -- I can try to set up a fake IdP that we can use for testing purposes.

I just took a long pass at writing down a specification for IdP Registration here: w3c-fedid.github.io/idp-registra... Can you point your agent to this specific and the explainer github.com/w3c-fedid/id... (which has mocks) and see if it is able to vide code an implementation?

By my personal one I mean try to build a POC between: - the @passport extension for Firefox - my PDS at pds.sgo.to - your RP, Rito And see if we can get an end to end POC of how this could work?

"since PDSs don’t yet expose FedCM endpoints" -- yeah, I was thinking that that's what we could change. If we could get the reference implementation exposing itself as a FedCM IdP it would go a long way @divy.zone. In the meantime, do you mind if we tried to build a PoC with my own personal one?

I'd love to collaborate on pre-FedCM to inform what a world might look like post-FedCM and what's the cheapest way to transition between those two worlds!

Most of the content on atproto is going to be mobile short videos, rather than text.

Logging-in and out of will cease to exist in the same way that they never existed on desktop (e.g. you never "logged in to winamp"). Code will come to data.

#1 A user will type @username on their browser url bar and load their homepage. #2 Because of #1, every user will interact with one another (e.g. commenting, messaging, etc) with their @-handles.

Yeah, good question on Safari! @atpassport.net any chance you have tried to build an extension to Safari too?

Pondering about terrytao.wordpress.com/2026/09/24/w... and the need for humans to "understand" ... ... In computer vision and translation, "understanding" symbolically came at such a huge cost ... feels like we gave up "understanding" for "utility".

I wonder if AI makes the cost of writing software 0 if that will lead to more native applications (vs web apps) or fewer. On one hand, if you make native apps as cheap to develop as web apps they might grow, but on the other hand, users might need more and more the web's security model. Any bets?

Wow, no way! I just installed the @atpassport.net Firefox extension and managed to log into a website using FedCM in Firefox using my own PDS. This is insane, I had no idea this was possible at all, and gives a whole opportunity for us to implement FedCM in Firefox (and maybe even Safari?).

It would be great if we could use the id assertion endpoint too so that any IdP could use it rather than just the @passport IdP. Also increases interoperability between native chrome and Firefox + extension so that it exercises the same code path.
010
Sam Goto @sgo.to · 25/09/2026
Sweet!!! That allows you to re-use the accounts endpoint, right? If so, what was the issue with the assertion endpoint that was still remaining?

"because extension fetch() cannot set native FedCM headers like Sec-Fetch-Dest: webidentity." -- is this actually the case? did you look into that constraint? isn't there a way to work around it?

Sam Goto @sgo.to · 25/09/2026
Which endpoints is it not speaking? The accounts endpoints? The assertion endpoint? Does that mean that passport exposes different endpoints to work with chrome and others for the Firefox extension?
100
Sam Goto @sgo.to · 25/09/2026
Exactly! I'm starting to work on a Chrome implementation and with your extension we would be able to cover Firefox too!! A bunch of atproto users are Firefox users so that would cover a bunch!! Is your extension open source? Can I contribute to it too?

Sam Goto @sgo.to · 24/09/2026
I'm getting a "your account is too new" (has to be at least 7 days old) to create a group chat ... probably because my PDS is hand-written and i messing things up ... Any chance someone at bluesky can figure out why that's happening?

Sam Goto @sgo.to · 24/09/2026
Do you think you'd be able to implement the extension that's being described here? github.com/w3c-fedid/id...

Sam Goto @sgo.to · 24/09/2026
This is insane! @thisismissem.social @divy.zone FYI on how we could go about cross-browser support!
120
Sam Goto @sgo.to · 24/09/2026
Oh, no way! That's insane great! Any chance this is open source? Can you point me to how this is implemented? Are you intercepting the navigator.credentials.get() call? Any chance we could work together to extent this extension to implement the rest of FedCM?
110
Sam Goto @sgo.to · 23/09/2026
This is insane cool! Can you point me to the firefox extension for me to give this a try? Does the website call into fedcm and then the extension intercepts it?

"See also Firefox and cookie protections." -- can you expand on this? In what ways does firefox change its cookie protections based on search?

Sam Goto @sgo.to · 23/09/2026
Oh, I was referring to both: removing the "star" but also removing the "bookmark bar". Is the "bookmark bar" disabled by default? In my experience, it is enabled by default?
110
Sam Goto @sgo.to · 23/09/2026
Sure, will do. I am, in fact, a bit bored (waiting to press "yes" on the next Claude turn), and also, am, in fact, open to changing my mind. Semble it is.

Sam Goto @sgo.to · 23/09/2026
Semble? Never heard about it and had to dig more than I was expecting to figure out what it was :)

"because browsers make money sending people to search instead." -- I was suggesting that Safari is a browser that isn't owned by a Search company, but maybe your point is that they (and Firefox) make money sending people and getting deals with search engines? Sure, I think I can see your point.
210
Sam Goto @sgo.to · 23/09/2026
I think I'd be in favor of that sub-goal too.
010
Sam Goto @sgo.to · 23/09/2026
do you have a sense of the proportion of "users that use the bookmark bar" and "users that don't"? maybe we should switch defaults and disable (and allow re-enabling it) if most users don't (and/or keep if most users do?)?
210
Sam Goto @sgo.to · 23/09/2026
bookmarking sites exist and have users? do you mean, like digg? "The reason browser bookmarks suck is because browsers make money sending people to search instead." -- ok, I'm not thaaaat bored to fall into this :) counter example being safari? but I take your point :)

Sam Goto @sgo.to · 23/09/2026
(bored, testing posting to bluesky, will try to pick a fight) Browser bookmarks: no idea why they still exist. Who manually curates bookmarks since search engines were introduced? Change my mind.

Early on in my career I read Drive and the premise that motivation comes from three things: autonomy, mastery and purpose. It never occurred to me that coding assistants may be removing the mastery aspect of the job and in doing so making it less appealing. medium.com/@maxwbuckley...

Fight of my life. In entrepreneurship, there is "entrepreneurship of stage" when founders spend more time going to conferences than building things. Similar dynamic in standards. You can also err on the other side, and become an ostrich. www.joelonsoftware.com/2001/04/21/d...

I think it might be a similar tension we are seeing in coding too: two cultures, one that seeks to build a product (without needing to understand it) and one that seeks to understand (without needing to build a product). Really fascinating article in the OP, worth a read.

It seems similar too to the ends of the spectrum in Kepler's linear regression to make predictions about planetary movement and Newton's gravity explaining it.

I'm neither a linguist nor a mathematician, but I'm getting a deja vu in the math community struggling with the opposing cultures of problem solving and conceptual understanding, similar to chomsky's attitude against LLMs and language understanding. gowers.wordpress.com/2026/09/17/w...
